Today's fun "whoops!" with pictures!

HI everyone!
So I set out and readied myself to document the breakdown of this TV that a former tenant of my complex left behind after they moved. The initial breakdown was out in the sun and it was really hot so I was going to do the step by step of the innards

And here we go!

This was from a Hitachi big screen tv - it's one of 3 that were behind the screen of the unit:

Ok first removed screws that secured big magnifying lens

because for some reason there is OIL BEHIND IT!!!!!
and now its on my Zuca as well as the carpet....

It's an oil type coolant.

I have heard that there's oil in those units. More than I thought though. Ty for the break down.

I've broken a few of those units down. I currently have the 3 tubes out of the biggest Sony unit I've ever seen. Each one of the tubes has a big cast aluminum reservoir attached to hold the oil. (they also had 3 yokes and 3 fat degaussing cables, too!). I've saved the lenses, they are super thick magnifying glasses. I've been too lazy to research if there's a market for them, but I'd bet somebody would pay a few bucks for them.

Careful where you leave those laying around as the sun shining thru them could torch something. Ask any ant.

If I think about it, I'll have to post up a picture of them. They are ground so smooth, it's really quite neat. They would probably make good paperweights.

I think every scrapper dose that at least once, live and learn. That reminds me of the guy that posted about braking down a coppier in his house and got toner all over the place. Lesson to learn here is don't brake things down in your house.

Should be a rite of passage for new scrappers..ha!

That stuff sucks if you get it on a cement floor. I might be speaking from experience..I might not be..I can neither confirm nor deny.

With my kids, if I had those magnifying glasses no ant would be safe.....

lol i did almost the same thing with a sub pump i was taking it apart on my couch. just so happened to bring it outside and drop it on a concrete block didn't realize they are full of some type of oil. makes sense now but i wasn't thinking about it at the time killed all the grass in the area it spilled oops. thanks for the pics and i'll be sure not to break one of those in my living room. what a mess good luck with cleanup

Dont feel bad julie I did the same freaking thing last year when I was new to scrapping tvs ugh what a mess. Oh well live and learn as they say.

I remember the first one I did, I knew the coolent was there and i still goofed

Thats y its called ur garge floor n not u livingroom floor..big difference..take,ur stuff apart outside!!!.i will hold towers in the house on occasion, but never break stuff down inside..

Lol yeah - my little sister gave it to me. I guess she used to use it to carry her ice skating gear. The wheels light up and everything!

I appreciate all the advice about using a garage or outside but it's just not an option. I live in an apartment and my living room is all I have! Trust and believe if the other was an option then I would be tearing it all down in those areas.

I think they're neat too - we're keeping them as well but not for torturing purposes! No ants/other insects will be harmed due to this scrap experience... lol

those lenses would go for about $20 set in resale, people buy them for projects

I did the same thing with the oil inside the lenses, lucky I was scrapping outside on gravel.

The lens setup can be used to make a ghetto 'projection TV'.

Basicly they just put the screen of a 14inch CRT in where the old single color CRT was & build a wooden box around it.
They turn up the brightness as far as possible & the lens throws the image out of the box, onto a wall etc. The image is backwards, so often they use a mirror to get it right again.
