I am new to this forum, but I do have a question about making the most profit. Does anyone know the pricing margin that a refiner will pay for motherboards, cell phone boards,ect. compared to that of a recycling company?

That is a question with so many variables. There is really not an accurate answer for you to be honest. Do you have a large quantity that you are looking to send out?
I studied into that myself awhile back, and all I found for small timers was a bunch of horror stories. Seems they charge by their expenses in refining the materials, every load gets charged (my guess) for a full process ( startup, aquisition of chemicals, equipment, processing, manpower, refining, sales, shutdown, cleanup, disposal of wastes ), and unless you had a boxcar load, your return on a smaller batch might net you a $2 or $3 return.Quote:

Yea, you really have to have ton+ to even think about it. Even further, you need to have a ton+ of a certain item, not just mobo mixed with finger mixed with peripheral mixed with telecom etc.Quote:

THeres some place in or around south jersey or SE PA that my buyer goes to that doesnt charge anything they just pay outright cash. He gets around 4.15 - 4.40 for clean large socket motherboards. and he guards the location from me like a hawk :-)

this subject has been discussed several times on the forum. (see archives).
1. unless you have truck loads per month and, I dont mean pick up truck. no decient sized refinery will give you the time of day.
2. for every legitimate refinery, large or small, there 100 rip offs.
3. on this very forum there are several e buyers who will buy 30 lbs or 30 semi loads, they are found in the ewaste buyers section. (EMAGIN THAT).
4. you cant expect the best price untill you have large weight the more weight the better the price and, untill the buyer knows how well your load will be cleaned. ( removing useless junk) they are buying the pms not stainless heat sinks copper etc. If every one would clean their boards right we would get at lest $1 a lb more Im sure.
5. there are just as many buyers out there trying to get one up on the seller as there are sellers trying to get one up on the buyer.
8. there is no middle man, there are middle men. a sells 50 lb to b, b sells 200 lbs to c, c sells 1000 lbs to d etc.
9. It takes years to learn this business as well as sweat , blood, and a lot of mistakes and money. this forum, its archives and, those here that came before you and willingly gave that blood and money, are willing to give you years of knowledge, and years of headstart, but you cant expect them to do all the work and give you every thing. just my .02

there have been several attempts to discuss this subject. using the archives can be frustrating considering the number of posts that are removed.
it will be difficult to get anyone to simply post all of their knowledge, and more importantly, their contacts.
it will be impossible on this forum until such time as an open honest exchange is allowed.
it would be interesting to see how much of an exchange of information would be possible on a open thread. perhaps we should ask the admin to create one.
wonder how long it will take this post to disappear.

You are correct here, Rbrooks; I used to be in retail, and I owned my business. It took me quite a while to build up my good contacts, and if someone would ask me my business, I would simply tell them it's none of your business! You want people to give up all their secrets and contacts they have worked hard at and invested tons of money on just so you can "try" and go behind their back. Good luck with that! If you invest the hundreds of thousands of dollars it takes then you "might" be entitled to some info, but till then,,,,,Quote:

thanks for the great info think i will sale mine for 3+ per lb and get some income if i ever win lottery i WILL buy all your info....but i dont buy tickets so i dont think they will send me a check any time soon ....lolQuote:

Its a huge risk at times I know I just had a batch of motherboards run at $4.45 a pound due to gold drop and bunch of colored boards so I hope this next batch will come out better if not..I will have to adjust pricing big time.
The refiners i contacted told me i had to have at least 20 tons

I do not think it was a bad assay as I knew it was going to come in low due to gold drop and people have been sending me colored boards and not as many green boards I would hope. There are very few true refiners for ewaste. If I had those kind of quantities, I would probably go to Xstrata or Umicore.
