I know I am responding to a post that is 4 months old and someone may have already said this.
I rarely ask for a tracking number. If the 6 x 9 envelope that I normally use is real thin I throw in some bubblewrap to thicken up the package. The clerks at the postoffice put on their own tracking number. This internal tracking number shows up on the post office web site and you can track the package.
