the power plant will have 3 light bulbs and each light bulb will have 3 wires. Its build on a redundant system for safety so if any one item failed...they have 2 more of said item...and 2 more power lines going to it. So, all pumps..they have three of them on three power lines are not connected together.
Explain all that to the people of Japan, they really got the short end of the stick.

I was waiting for someone to bring that up.

A long story short they just got messed up back when the earthquake hit them. It took out some of the main pumps so they where having a issue with shutting it all down....then the water came...they knocked out all the power on all three lines, there back up gens where damaged by the earthquake and where not able to start.

That is why they needed gen and pumps to shut it down.

Also note the damage they took on the housing it self.

They had a list of things failing and could not keep up with it. But if they HAD power after the earthquake they COULD of shut it down even with the main pumps dead as they still had the back up pumps that they USED after they had a main power line back up and running.
