GPS tracking just in case you would like to know.

Tuesday Dec6 (coincidently the day before pearl harbor day) the U.S supreme court will decide weather it is legal for fed law enforcement ( or any other for that matter) to be able ,with out your knowledge or permission, and with out a warrent, break into your vehicle and replace your GPS system, with an identical one, with one major difference, the new gift will be able to track your every move, and the info can be downloaded at a distance with wifi.

The largest manufacturer of these devices says they have been doing it for 2 years or more and have purchased 10s of thousands of untraceable units over the counter retail.

there are countles cases of these units discovered by vehicle owners I personaly know of one.

you may think this post dosent belong on a scrap forum, but let me say that scrapping is one of the last bastions of freedom and free enterprise left in this country. If the moderators feel this post should be removed, no harm no foul. Just thought ya all atght to know.

You posted in off topic. I think you're fine. A lot of scrappers use a GPS, myself included...well used to until the cord broke. Looking to either replace the cord or get a new GPS with better features.

I see this as one more interference from the gov that has zero business in our personal affairs.

I am curious, how did your friend find out their unit had been replaced?

The new unit would have to have the same history as the one replacing it. Seems like that would be hard to replicate.

While on the subject of GPS, one tip I have heard of is to never program "home" as being your home address. Say you're at the mall, thief takes it and hits home, he goes straight there, knowing you're still at the mall.

Granted others could be home but you get the idea.

Suppose if you still wanted to program home, put in a nearby stores address.

I.S. is that just a standard plug in style of cord, that plugs into the side of the unit? If so I probably still have 15-20 still left from inventory I've been slowly selling off on ebay. These have a plug-in on one end and a liter plug on the other. If that's it I would just need to know the voltage and size of the end that plugs into the gps. Like the old saying"Such a deal I make you",,,

Correct. Has a lighter plug on one end and the other end looks like this.

It's a Garmin Nuvi 260W. Can't find information on voltage or size. Still looking.

EDIT: All I can find is that it's a "mini USB", nothing that tells what voltage. Now that I think about it...wouldn't most anything plugging into a cig lighter be 12 volt? Don't recall ever seeing a transformer on various plugs I have used, just a fuse.

he uses the same system in his czr and truck, when he first got it he had to use duct tape on the rear part of the mount when he got the mount fixed he removed the tape but it left a bit of stickey near the bottom. he changed it one day and noticed the sticky was gone. He looked it over and discovered it was ion newer shape then the one he had, and when he checked he found only very recient info. He is a computer Geek pretty much up on such things.

The main point is , why is the supreme court even considering such a thing. not only is it invasion of anexpectation of reasionable privacy, it is also burglery and breaking and entering to install the system among other crimes.

That's how my cord end fell apart. Using it between van and truck, half the time not getting a good stick on the suction cup and then it falls off and dangles by the cord. Do it enough times and it breaks.

I agree 110% it's breaking and entering. But somehow it doesn't apply to the government because "they know what is best for us".

I could see it being used to track criminal activity, and I am sure they tell you that's what they're "doing".

well crimminal pretty much covers it. if you are exmilitary, a tea partier, a R paul supporter. , a 99%er. have patriotic bumper stickers or a dozen other things, according to home land security you are one of two things, a suspected terrorist or a potential terrorist, eith makes you a suspected criminal.

I would love to see any link or website that supports the claim that police are replacing GPS units with bugged units. It is my understanding that this lawsuit isn't about the 'Garmin' type GPS units that hang from your windshield but rather ' tracking bugs' that police hid under people's bumpers, etc.

Don't forget theft. I mean even if they replace it they still stole one. Suppose someone took one of those new F250's that belonged to someone else. Yet they leave one of these old junkers in it's place. Someone's going to the slammer if they get caught in the nice, new F250 and the supreme court aint gonna listen to their case.

did some research last night, it turns out most of the modorn GPS trackers the gov is using are self contained units that are attached by magnets to the underside of the vehicle. bjybjy is right to a point, however if this is okd then it opens the door, pretty much for any thing goes. The boiled frog system has been used with great success for the last 50 or 100 years.

if you go to Coasttocoastam.com you will se the old system where the implanted bugs in the dash units.

Of the subject. But to help the guy out with the broken cord. Just go to harbor freight. Buy one of thoise cigarette lightewr adapters with a usb end on it. Like this

    http://www.amazon.com/Cigarette-Ligh.../dp/B000CC6I5W

zThen get any old standard usb cable with a mini on the other end. Done. Now you have a charging cord.Trust me. I have done it. Its essentially like plugging it into the pc where it charges of the pc, but instead, it charges from the lighter adapter.

    Hope this info helps.

That would be cheaper then trying to buy the specialty cord just for the gps.

Thanks to all who gave ideas about a GPS power cord. Once I determined what type of end it was, I jumped on CL, found a Verizon phone car charger for 5 bucks. Gave it a try before giving her the money. It's working so far.

There is a fix for that...and its the same I do with all my computer type items...have a scratch and or some mark that would be rather small but in a way you can ID the item. My computer case and laptop have "seal" over the screw holes so no one can just simply take them off.

All ways keep your phone on you and insight...there are programs that someone can install onto your phone and even if your phone is turned off they can still hear everything thats going on into the room...your phone will become a "bug"

P.s if you have a desktop and have a webcam and or mic...unplug them when not in use.

All USB cords put out 5v DC. Any cig lighter plug with a micro USB will charge it. Even a cord with micro on one end and standard USB on the other can charge it off your home computer/laptop.

Check local thrift stores. Find any cellphone car charger that fits the GPS and youll be back up and running.
