A sound my truck makes...

Mechanics say it could be either the u-joint,

Once you have heard a u joint clicking, they have a sound like nothing else. When you take your foot off the brake and start to accelerate you are shifting the truck weight from the front to the rear, so it might be a front end part getting some slop. I'm thinking maybe a control arm?? Can't think; too much sun today(shhhh don't scare it away). lol

So many questions to ask.

2wd or 4wd? If 4wd does it happen when the 4wd is engaged? Does the sound happen when you let off the brake, or when you step on the foot fuel, or in the transition time from one pedal to the next? Mechanic has a good question on which end it is coming from, and like he said the u-joint would make a distinctive sound.

Now if it is more of the "gong" sound I would opinion that it is a u-joint or other problem putting slack on the drive line, worn splines, t-case chain if 4wd, so on. Pretty easy check is to crawl under and twist the drive line with your hands and see if there is slop in it. Of course do this while the vehicle is parked!

If the sound is a "ding" I would opinion that it is a front end part that is loose and "dinging" when weight transfer occurs. That would be happening when you step on the fuel just like the slack in the driveshaft would.

If it happens when you let off the brake pedal, I would say "Pull them front wheels and take a look at the calipers, rotors and wheel bearings." While your in the wheel well, shake some of the front end parts and see if something is loose.

The wifey just got home so now I have to go work on a '96 chevy. How fun!
