There are also some free tools I have used over the years that seem to work very well. I will post the links because there are decoy programs that are malicious that try to trick you into downloading. Make sure all of your programs are closed prior to starting the program as open programs can hold malicious programs open in memory (I restart and open the programs before I open anything and then let it do its work).
One is Malwarebytes... https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam_current/ Use the free program (although I have considered buying because I use it often). Install, update,run. Do as recommended by the program. Restart.
Download Spybot search and destroy. http://www.spybotupdates.biz/files/spybot-2.4.exe Update, run scan (delete the temp files it wants to delete prior to the start of scan). Allow scan to finish, remove found files. It may say that some files are still active and must be removed at restart. Restart. Remove any found files. I use the immunization. Make sure the immunization is current and click immunize. It will scan for immunization and find the open holes. Once done, click immunize and it will block know programs from exploiting known holes.
These programs take some time to clean, so don't do it right before you are expecting a happy birthday skype from your grandchildren.
I use these programs to keel all my computers clean and to clean computers I have bought used before I trust them. I have not had any problems other than TrendMicro paid wanting to uninstall prior to their installation. I then reinstall with no issues. These tools will clear all of your cookies so you will have to sign into all of the sites you visit that automatically log you in.
If you are concerned, wait and see if anyone has any issues with the programs I have referred and make your decision. These programs have made impossible machines into daily use machines for me.
