Aluminum cans are the preferred can of choice for a true scrapper, best value for time spent. Dry flat asphalt pavement is much easier than other road surfaces. This is especially true if you have never kicked many cans down the road. Don't forget, if your kicking cans, when done kicking it, pick it up and put it in your scrap bucket. When bucket is full take to scrap yard and get paid for all the "Road Work" you have done.
Dirt & gravel roads not recommended for can kicking down the road activities, unless you have access to water & soap daily. Dirty road can kicking, tends to cause participants to get very dirty, this "dirty look" is not good. People that don't participate in can kicking will not understand the "dirty look", you will look dirty to them. This is normal reaction by those that don't kick cans, they just don't know any better. You as a active and practicing can kicker are "In the know" and they are not aware of all that you have accomplished (remember they may not be up to speed yet!).
Can of choice, lets face it, just a better looking can. A can made out of aluminum has a better scrap value. When your thru kicking it, pick it up and take it home with you, place it in the aluminum can bucket, fill that bucket. When bucket is full, sell it, later on buy a six pack of your favorite beverage (Aluminum can packaged beverages best option). A aluminum can kicker is a responsible "can kicker", they are environmentalist and ecologically responsible members of society. Aluminum = $0.30 to $0.50 per pound, better for the planet and you will look better kicking it too!
These type of cans are OK if that's what you have, do the best with what you have, we all start somewhere. Work hard, do your "road work", practice the "kick" as much as possible. Steel can kicking is not as popular as it used to be, the pioneer can kickers, kicked them as that was all they had. Be careful, make sure to clean cut the lid off, a jagged and rusty steel can, CAN cause health problems. Very important to properly dispose of these cans when your done kicking them down the road. Don't be a bad can kicker, pickup your cans when your done kicking, help keep our roads clean. A steel can is recyclable, put it with your other scrap steel, has little value, but it is heavier than other cans, so the weight of many steel cans adds up fast.
There's nothing wrong with kicking the cans down the many roads life presents us, pursue your can kicking possibilities, take all the roads you CAN kick, go forward and kick those cans, just kick and keep on kicking it!
