I actually enjoy winter. My work slows down, and I love to ice fish. Money gets a little tight, but this year I am taking a minimum wage job with 3M. It's one of those gigs where you can just show up whenever. Once all my scrap is broke down I'm gonna fish and work part time for gas money.
Now we just need some COLD temps to make some good ice.
    if only...

in 2005 i was caught on a bus in Mexico-attempting to do exactly that
i was pissed off that the immigration at JFK cancelled my 10 yr multiple entry visa
i had been to the US in 2000, 2001, 2002 & then in 2003 when i landed there in March, i was detained for 7 hrs & then sent back

so i tried to enter from Mexico
but i did not know any coyotes/smugglers, so i went solo

im sure most of u have seen my pic- u will know why i attracted their attention.

It was in the mid 50's here yesterday, with the same forecast expected for today, but after that the temps are dropping at or below freezing. I'm glad it was there and not here. I'm just praying for something other then what we had last winter, which is nothing compared to some of you, but it was record snow fall for us....

pjost- If you're going to spend a lot of time traveling to and fro ice fishing, you should figure out where various coyotes are crossing through choke points and set snares for them. Could pay for your ice fishing gas and bait?? I know you have a couple of yotes up there in the ne quadrant of the state...

Anyone else wake up to this?

stupid coyotes, or stupid me I guess but I have had zero luck with them sense moving to sodak. I have not trapped or called in a single one. I have done all right with mink I guess but they are so plentiful right now there are no muskrats. Mink are more valuable but muskrats are easy.

beardo- Yeah, I'm not the greatest yote geter either but if I was on a lot of gravel roads over the early winter at least on a regular basis, especially passing public ground, I'd be hanging some snares with nearby entanglement stakes. If they work they way they're supposed to, self dispatch is quick.

We have no mrats down here as well. Don't know if its because the dry years have taken out a lot of wetlands, the high prices for rats, or a combo of some disease and/or increased predation. Wild mink have been on the skids the past few years. I sold a typical mrat at auction in May 2013 for more money than a female mink I had caught. It will probably take an exceptional buck mink (finished) to break an Andy Jackson this year...

I love living where the snow shovels are painted with pictures and hung on the wall as decorations.

I'm just not into trapping/shooting animals. IDK why, maybe I'm soft. I'm not a bleeding heart liberal or anything, quite the opposite. I don't have a problem with other people hunting or trapping, just don't care for it myself. Must be the dog lover in me.

Fish are another story. We try to be pretty responsible tho. The wife and I catch and release most of our fish. Keep enough for a nice meal once in awhile and give a few fillets away.
