    I just got a lawnmower engine that is mostly cast aluminum. I am thinking about pulling it apart because I think I can get more for the cast than for shred.

    You can. If you, personally, feel it's worth the time and effort to break it down, then it is worth it. This is always subjective. Everyone has to make their own determination in regards to time vs value.
