We go to range to shoot and I can use the gun, she can use the gun and anyone there that wants to take a turn can use the gun, as long as the registered owner is present, per state law.
We go deer hunting and only my wife can use the gun to harvest a deer because a handgun used for hunting may only be used by the person to whom it is registered, per state law.
Taking the gun from home to range or hunting fields, the registered owner must be present with said gun, per state law.
Summer time my wife is out of town for 8 weeks. Gun may be with her or at home, per state law.
Put together these require that we do a transfer registration twice a year from her to me and from me back to her. Prior to deer season the gun is registered to her. Afterward we go back to have it switched back to me.
Same gun. Same owners. Same address. Different purposes require going back to the local authorities to change the paperwork, per state law.

One gun, one couple and we never crossed a state line to have that mess. Can't imagine trying to keep track of all the variations if we had hunted out of state.
