Here's an interesting article from the Smithsonian Magazine about people making a living by finding things of value in London sewers in the 1850's. It notes a surprising detail--that this work could make a person some decent money.
But those guys must have been tough as nails, or at least had cast iron immune systems!! And noses that could be turned off!!
