Isn't maybe it time for the post office to just close it's doors for good? The private sector could now do the same job. Something that could not be said a couple three hundred years ago or whenever the USPS started.

So it seems it should cost more to mail a letter. That's capitalism and the way it should be. The post office is so regulated they can't even raise the price of their services without government permission. Yeah, private enterprise could do a better job...if the feds would stay out of the way. When the post office was trying to cut down on expenses recently they attempted to close some of the more remote office that were not supporting themselves but the powers that be said no. Just another reason they won't ever be profitable.

Very good point, but consider the following: Evidentially USPS needs to charge more for what they are doing.
So, take what they should be charging in to account, not just what they are charging. Then realize that ups or fedex establish their current rates by realizing how many letters they will be delivering and how much they need to charge to make enough profit. Just with most everything, once quantity rises prices get lowered, so if the usps went away then ups/fedex/new company would be able to charge less, because they would be doing more volume.
Then if letter rates did rise to be too much in our opinions, we would have to ask ourselves how much do we need to send letters and how much is it that worth to us. Sure we, myself included, like to get a paper bill and like to send in a check, but more and more those are becoming options and not the required form of payment.
I don't see the USPS going away real soon, but perhaps in another 10 years it will be a real option.

I disagree. I think that the Post Office still has it's place. Think about bills and magazines. I don't have an iPad to read magazines and other stuff on, and I know that a lot of people don't either. I still get most of my bills and other stuff from the Post office rather than email because I like feeling that I know the person the bill is for will get it, and that there is low risk of my information getting out of the envelope. I know UPS and Fedex don't want to deal with envelopes, they have better things to do. I also prefer getting small packages from the post office because it's cheaper, and I know that it will get handled with a little more care than UPS or FedEx. (The Fedex guys either throw the packages onto your doorstep from the middle of your yard, or they put the package under your doormat no matter how big it is.) IDK, It would'nt be the same without the post office. I also would hate to get any more of these than I have to, especially just for an envelope:

re: bills: Billing is part of the cost of doing business. If billing isn't costing the company as much as it should and the USPS is loosing money delivering the bills than we are actually subsidizing the business doing the billing. I own my own business, let us sink or swim on our own.
re: magazines: Magazines are a luxury of the rich. Totally not necessary. What does it matter what they cost?
