If it was a flash one time use camera they have a pretty powerful capacitator in them and that is probably what got him. You can hear the capacitor humm/whirr and charge up after you take a picture with one of them.
My father is an HVAC tech and told me a story about how he learned the hard way not to store capacitators in the same pants pocket as a AA battery. He had replaced an old capacitator on a furnace and put the old one in his pocket after discharging it. About 3 hours later he got one hell of a shock right where you don't want to get a shock! He figures the loose AA battery in his pocket much have charged the capacitator somehow.
