Refining gold yourself at home...anyone done it successfully?

Why would someone attempt to extract the gold from, what maybe 10 cpus..just saying that im glad that stupid vid is off of here...i know if I was ever to attempt recovery, I wouldbt put 24 hours into just a couple chips..not worth it n pathetic by all means in my mind..my 3 cents

Now come on ADMIN. The above man BarrenRealms says that the vdeo was a used method in the industry. He is in the refining feild. Then why was it removed...danger. Scrapping can be dangerous...using power tools can be dangerous...strapping large appliances to the roof, or overloading trucks driving down the highway is dangerous. And those images and practices are all over here.

one other quick thing I noticed. And yes I know this should be in Off Topic. However, take a look at how many views this has gotten ALREADY. I would have to think that people here are interested in this subject.

Your right totalfish. However this has been talked about before. The admins of this forum dont want this on this forum. There is a whole forum dedicated to this very topic and people usualy get sent to that forum to talk about it. I personaly wouldnt want to do this at home. No amount of gold is worth your life. I wouldnt want to deal with those chemicals anywhere near my house and kids. On a side note I would love to build a home forge to melt pop cans into ingots :)

If you still want to view the video it came from youtube, so you might try Googling it. If you do there's probably so many that you can't shake a stick at them all.

One thing that you have to understand about posting on ANY forum is that if you want helpful advice, you gotta do your own homework first.. so you can be more informed when you ask. Secondly, whenever someone says, "search the forums" it's usually because the question has been asked many times in the past.

Think of it as if you went to a buffet restaurant and you asked the waitress for something that was already on the buffet. More than likely she would tell you where it was, however, if it wasn't on the buffet, she would go get it for you.

yeah your right. I just can't help thinking,( And please others reply) this and other forums have been around a long time, and let's say a post is 2 years old. Then it's been getting the "asked before" for many months. Do we not think that a heavily experienced scrapper, that's new to the forum, probably WON'T dig up old posts to reply to and share their knowledge. That's why I am throwing the "you don't have to reply to repeats, but maybe they have some purpose" That's all.

I have done a bit of gold recovery from ewaste. I have gold powder, but not gold metal. About 1 cc of brown powder for months of work & 5 gallons of HCL & 400mls H2O2 & 150gms SMB.

It takes days & days of work, weeks if not months.
For me full weeks of mindnumbing work. Every tiny sort of ewaste item has to be processed in a different way. Every sort of CPU has to be seperated & then processed according to its makeup.
Every sort of board has to be processed in its own way depending on whats on it & whats its made of & what you are getting off it.

You need a lot of ewaste to make getting the gold worthwhile, hundreds if not thousands of computers, all pre 2000...

Theres been several time I could have maimed myself with acids, sliced myself, ruined my kitchen work area & rusted everything in sight & a bunch of times I could have lost all my gold too.

It'd be easyer to get 100 computers & scrap them down & sell them.
In NZ I have got 60 computers over the last year, theres just not that many here.

There was a very lengthy documentary I watched on this subject a few months back. It said that at a very large refining plant that they would extract roughly 1 ounce of gold per ton of bulk computer scrap.

It doesnt seem to me that someone at home would be able to turn a profit on a small scale with this kind of yeild. Yes there is gold to be recovered, But the process is far too dangerous and yields way too little to try and do this on a small scale and turn a profit. Maybe if you were doing it as a hobby just to understand the process, But it is highly doubtful there is money to be made doing this in your garage unless you have extensive knowledge on the subject.

I wasn't condemning the leaching process but the poor execution. Without going into details I think it is safe to say comparing your set-up and execution makes what is shown in that video pathetic.
