Most states make dealers give the seller something to sign stating the seller is the legal owner of the scrap. I'd imagine that this would release the dealer from any liability for buying stolen metal. Based on your location, I don't know if they have laws like that in the UK. If the law doesn't make you do this, I'd recommend using your best judgement
