Trying to learn more about scrapping

My name is Darren Vallaire. I own Computer Heaven, Inc. in Baton Rouge, LA. We are a retail computer store and we accept scrap computer equipment from customers and others. We refurbish anything core 2 duo or higher and resell those in our retail store. We are scrapping everything else. Trying to learn the best way to do this and just discovered this forum.

I have lots of computers of course, but also printers, LCD monitors, CRT monitors, switches, servers, you name it. Trying to figure out what I should break down and how far to break it down to be profitable. I will have to pay someone to break stuff down so I have to be careful of the costs. So far I have not found anyone to even take the CRT monitors.

Unfortunately I am in Baton Rouge, LA and the nearest escrap yard to me I think is in Wise Recycling in Pensacola Florida. I would think there would be some escrap yards about the same distance from me in Houston Texas but I am not sure. Probably I will just ship the stuff out.

I did drive a load of about 8,700 pounds (mix of everything) to Wise Recycling back in July (rented a truck) and got $2,700. But the truck and fuel cost me over $500 not to mention my time driving 4 hours both ways plus unloading the truck.

Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Looking forward to learning a lot here.

    Thanks,
    Darren
