    New and Learning

Hello. Thanks for a great place as a newby to learn about scrapping. Had to make a temp move to another state due to husbands job and found that the Desert seems to be a serious dumping ground for garbage compared to the state we came from. After noting a lot of computer and electronics laying around I couldn't help but wonder. What caught my eye was the amount of copper everywhere. People like to shoot everything here and in a few hours I had collected a full box of mother boards, ram, pcb, harddrives, etc., even found the box to fill. Normally our hobby is stream and load prospecting but here in the desert there is a new form I can pick up and clean up the environment a little at a time. Lots to learn here and really appreciate a place to read about scrapping and put the information to good use.

    Steph

A really great start to your hobby. Take to time to read a lot of the old threads to help you get going in a profitable position. You may want to look into metal detecting in the desert as well but as long as you are doing this well stay with it. Oh yea welcome to the forum. Mike.

Good luck Steph, and welcome to SMF. One thing I noticed about the desert SW my first time through there was the amount of stuff on the side of the roads. Other places, when someone throws out a can, or a bottle, it gets covered up with grass and leaves, and is soon buried by them. But in the desert it just sits there, and sits, and sits, and sits. Good luck cleaning it up ; )

Thanks for the great welcome. I have been spending a lot of time reading, more than I actually have time for. Las Vegas has its challenges and finding anyone in the smaller ewaste scrap business that isn't a salvage/scrap yard or large out of state company has been frustrating and I'm at zero. Have some questions and will post them in appropriate forum threads. Again, thanks for the welcome and for a great forum with tons of info.

Hi, Steph - welcome to the forum. There is a lot of great information on here about turning that electronic junk (particularly computers) into cash.

Hey Steph, there was a thread just today about old computer parts etc that a guy had found at an old target practice place or something like that in AZ. Those parts you've found could be very old military, and much higher quality than regular, newer computer/electronic components

Thought I would update my intro. Moved from Las Vegas back to my home in NE Washington State. Hard to be a Mountain Girl and live in the desert Normally I have been into lode prospecting and when my Military husband was PCS'd to Las Vegas I found it shocking the amount of garbage all over the desert, especially electronics. Being a forum member at the Gold Refining Forum I had noted talk about E-Waste so had a small bit of knowledge and decided what the heck, might as well clean up some of this desert and make some money doing it. I had met other scrappers out there, none doing E-Waste, mostly brass and copper collectors. I should have been more diligent about the spent ammo as before I moved back home what I did collect was payed out at $1.70 #

Being back here means a change in my tactics now that I have the scrapping fever. My neighbor and I were chatting and he's been doing some minor scrapping but has a lead on some old mobile homes that need to be removed from properties in the county and he didn't have a truck or trailer to get the jobs. I have a F250 Super Duty and access to a large trailer (My Dad). So my next course of action is to read up here on dismantling and scrapping mobile homes and perhaps junk cars. That is, until the snow thaws and I can spend this summer back prospecting. Before our Orders came, we were onto a nice quartz float and found some really nice gold ore.

This is a great forum and I truly appreciate the mass of information and helpful members here. I do plan on buying a membership when finances straighten out. Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the update...I personally have never done a mobile home but many have said if you don't charge for demo it's not worth the work that goes into it.
