X-rays can be hard to get ahold of. Any doctor's office that is just tossing them in the garbage can is violating HIPPA laws that govern confidentiality. They and other medical records must be shredded and is typically done by one of those mobile document shredding trucks that offer their services.

the only way I could see doing this is being one of those guys and seperating them from everything else as you shred the files. That would probably be more time consuming the the scrap value of them.
