Junkfreak - Hawaii's interstate serves the same purpose as the interstate system in the continental U.S. It was created to move supplies quickly from military positions around the area in case of invasion. If it had remained a state highway, Hawaii would only qualify for a reduced portion of federal funds. Although it does not connect with other states, classified as an interstate allowed for more federal funding, as well as federal control of the system.
