I run a yard in North Florida. A shredder is way way way more expensive than what you have to invest. Also, for every hour of operation, there is an hour of downtime/maintenance. A shredder is a 24 hour operation. From the ground up, probably $30 million to start with all other equipment. That would be on the cheaper end. Jacksonville would be a very bad place for a shredder as you already have plenty of yards around there and two shredders. CMC in Jacksonville has a shredder and Gerdau also has a shredder in Baldwin. As a shredder you will also be competing with the shredder in Ocala, and a couple of other places and you will be running razor thin margins. Maybe starting a smaller yard with a platform scale and a truck scale would be a better option. Purchase scrap dragon, scales, licenses, employees, a good front end loader or two, a car crusher, cardboard baler, and an excavator. Still, Jacksonville is a tough place to do it as the competition is pretty stiff.

    Good luck to you.
