Mostly vehicles and iron, but have piles with literally tons of non ferrous and e-waste to break down when/if opportunity arises...usually when my small iron pile is low and I need more stuffing material for cars.....then I spend a day or 2 breaking down. Usually take in 2-4 stuffed cars at a time, depending on their size.
Non ferrous/e-parts, batteries and cores go in separately, when a worthy load of each has accumulated.
If it will scrap, I pick it up.
Edit...obviously, your skill set, equipment, and connections should play a large role in what you choose to spend most of your scrap time doing.

I specialize in anything I can sell for more than I paid for it. Often find me putting a torch to old farm machinery tho, due to the fact I live in rural America and that's what's round here to scrap. Couple of weeks ago sold my first load of e scrap, I'm always up to scrap anything that gets in my way. Gonna try to do more e scrap in the future, got $41 for 15# of high grade boards so Im liking it

Insulated wire and that is all I do. I flirted with computers but the headache is not worth it to me.

I USED too. I used to only deal in Aluminum, Brass and Copper.. Now I do it all.
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

In nature the specialists are the first to die when their ecosystem changes.... nothing special here I take it all!

I'm moving towards solely dealing in degaussing cable tape![]()

i would LOVE to get into escrapping but here in South Africa theres hardly anyone buying from the public
as a result, the big guys have huge skips & containers at the big dept stores where the conveniently ask the public to come dump their ewaste "for free".
what i end up doing is selling my ewaste to the scrapyard where i just get paid shred/sub grade rate for it.
its quite sad- as i know i would have made much, much more from ewaste if i was living in the US like most of u guys.
i went to have a look at one ewaste container at a Sams Club like wholesale store in Durban called Makro- i felt like jumping into it & taking the degaussing cables from the monitors.
quite sad.

I specialize in free scrap. Every now and they I will buy some of get paid to remove some.

In that case I would imagine that the first good load of stripped copper (after buying stripper) would more than pay for it.

Funny you say that about a stripper, I have been on ebay for the past half hour looking for a stripper. Good thing about appliances they all have electric motors and wiring as well as other recyclable items.

I refrained from adding another comment so I wouldn't incriminate myself. P.S. That was eBay not Craigslist.![]()
I do everything. Basically if it is worth it I will do it but, I have noticed the longer I scrap and more experience I get, I make more adjustments. For example for cardboard, I require a 1000lb minimum if I am just taking cardboard.
The question was "do you specialize in one area" Yes, we specialize in E-waste but we will scrap anything we can make a buck on. We have literally outfitted our warehouse with desks, chairs, work table, carts, bins, shelves and storage cabinets and even some tools that we got while making a pick-up of something completely different. Specializing just makes you a little more knowledgeable in one area, but volume pays the bills, so if it doesn't move on its own or breathe, its fair game for us.
Since there are 2 answers that could apply to me, ie: e-scrap or everything, I tried to answer the question he ask: "do you specialize...:

msmoorad, You might have to do some homework and become an intermediate buyer/processor.i would LOVE to get into escrapping but here in South Africa theres hardly anyone buying from the public
as a result, the big guys have huge skips & containers at the big dept stores where the conveniently ask the public to come dump their ewaste "for free".
Someone over there has to be buying. Search them out. Bigger loads bring better money. If you can find a buyer then you can deliver it further.
If your picking them up for free then you can afford to set on them for awhile. The parts don't take up a lot of room.
