    Steel War Pennies

I just found tin of pennies from WWII all made of steel. Anybody have any particular knowledge of how I should try to sell these?

They range in price from about $0.05 each to $1.00 or so. The mintmark also plays a role in value, with the S being the most valuable. That's the retail price though - you could take them all to a coin dealer, who would probably pay you 1/4 to 1/2 that amount. You would probably do better selling them one or two at a time on eBay. Sets from all three mints (Philadelphia - no mint mark, Denver - D mintmark, San Francisco - S mintmark) look like they do better. steel penny set | eBay

They're very difficult to find in circulation - I've searched thousands of rolls over the years and have only found two or three. They're not really rare though - coin dealers have thousands of them in nearly perfect condition.

Unless any of them are in an extremely great condition, then the best thing you can do is sell them in one lot on e-bay. How many do you have? Because as said above, there are literally tons of pristine samples of these held by every dealer. And, just as many uncirculated as well.

I think that's what I will do is sell them as one lot. There's probably a hundred of them, none in spectacular condition.

Hm, I guess I just want to get rid of them somehow. I have plenty of "collectibles" and I can hardly move. I'll stop at a coin shop and see what they'll give me for them, and take whatever they pay just to get them out of my hands. Could always dip 'em in Tarn-ex and make 'em shine and give them away to kids... :-)

Unfortunately Tarn-x will not do anything. Since those pennies are made of steel, they rust, and TarnX will not do anything for rust.

LMAO!!!!! I would have to agree with a couple of the other posts, try to sell them in bulk instead of small lots. Another option is to try to sell them on Craigslist in the collectables section to someone local, and avoid the feebay fees.

For those of you that find coins - whatever you do - DON'T TRY TO CLEAN THEM. Ever. In any way. Not even plain water. Nothing.

If they have any collector value at all, you will destroy that value by trying to clean it. Collectors want the coins dirty and tarnished. They will buy a dirty, tarnished beat-up looking coin over a shiny cleaned one every time.

I like your posting regarding your coins. However, England uses pennies. Here, in the United States, we use cents. Just look on the reverse. I want to educate people. I do not mean to criticize you.

Which is correct, “cent” or “penny”?

It may not be the legal term, but everybody calls them pennies, not cents.
