Example of More then Scrap Value

I was scraping some computers and servers last night and ran across an unusual board. Before tossing it in the scrap box I checked Ebay values.

The cheapest one out there was $300. I threw mine out there for $125 and had the first bid within an hour. Even if it closes for that I will be very happy.

Interesting, a co-worker and I were just talking about DAC I/O boards too. Even the old ISA cards that are from National Intruments are worth something. The one you have is the PCI one, ISA's are older.

nice score....... it's awesome that checking something for more than scrap value has become second nature on this forum. I love seeing everyone score like that!

One problem that I have had when trying to decide whether to scrap or to sell as working part is how I can test the device to make sure it's actually fully functional. With some things like harddrives and power supplies it is relatively easy, does not require a lot of extra equipment or a lot of time. But with things like MBs, PCI cards, etc it's harder. In some cases even if you put it on eBay as "non-working/for parts", you might get more for it than scrap value, but in other cases it will lower the selling price so much that it would be better to just scrap it.

Testing would be best, but I don't even know what this card does... And then just plugging it into a pci slot and seeing if something is recognized isn't good enough to say it's tested... something like this, with this much value, pulled from a retired system, I will assume it works and list it under that assumption.

I do offer to take back returns... because if it doesn't work it should have been scrapped anyway. All I will really be out is the $5 shipping and the buyer will be out $5 shipping (it's a gamble... I've dropped more then that in a minute at the slot machine) ... if it doesn't work then the money I got from the sale really wasn't mine in the first place. Makes for a cleaner account on Ebay... because I can guarantee you this won't be my last Ebay listing....

One way is to have a simple test bench set up with only a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. From there you just plop the tower on it prior to breaking it down, and see what it's made of. I'm aware that this could seem daunting to one who has no prior computer experience, but it's really fairly simple. If it boots up with no excessive sparks or smoke, that is a good sign. If it has no memory, keep a few spares around ( a one pound, $14, sampling of ram would be more than enough to cover most every type memory ) and remember to retrieve them before moving on. You can check one out even without a hard drive/operating system, just go into setup at boot and take a look around ( navigate setup using left/right/up/down arrows on your keyboard along with enter/esc keys mostly ) The first screen in setup will usually tell you all you need to know mainboard/cpu/ram etc. Then you can call it working pull, or tested working. I personally would rather see one of these terms than a "refurbished" because in most cases away from the original manufacturer or an associated company, it is most likely pure bs more related to "dusted off a bit maybe"

As for your comment wdaddy, if that was pulled from a working system, and you had run it across a bench before dismantling it you may have been able to see it in system devices as "this device is working properly" etc. Most people wouldn't bother, but being primarily a computer guy i run everything across the bench and power it up, that's the point at which i decide which way it goes from there

You have an awesome Ebay record BTW

I guess when I get in scrapping mode I don't stop until something shiny catches my eye... by that time it may to late to plug in the system.... Most of what I find is common items and I don't plug much of anything in....

12 years as a hardware tech and 3 as a programmer... most of the time I can recognize something I should stop and take a look at....

and, btw, my amazon account is just as big. Lots going on. Thanks for the complement.

Not to side track the thread, but what do you find works better and gets less fees taken out; Ebay or Amazon? I never did Amazon.

Amazon sells my books, videos, dvd, and cds. Ebay sells my other merchandise. Ebay is more flexible... Amazon is more for static items that really don't change... your book will be the same as everyone else's book... except for the condition.

With amazon, there is no listing fees. List your stuff and stick it on the shelf. (fire and forget) Listings never expire and you don't get charged until something sells... and since amazon controls the entire transaction you don't even miss the fees (until you do your taxes and see what they took for fees for the year... EEks!). I have had stuff sell years after I listed them...

With ebay you get paid in paypal right away. With amazon they send your earnings, minus their fees, twice a month to your bank account... you can manually request the transfer whenever you want, but it takes several days to get the transfer complete.

Fees suck on both... but that's the cost of doing business.
