    LCDs Printers & ABS Plastic

Hey guys I'm new to the forum but have been e-scrapping for about a year now. Ive figured most everything out except a couple things....

    1) What to do with printers?
    2) What to do with broken LCD screens (primarily laptop screens)
    3) What to do with all the plastic that comes from taking this stuff apart?

Does anyone buy this stuff or know of anyone who does?!?

Olliec, do yourself a favor and use the search option at the top of the page. Do some leg work searching through the threads then come back and ask some question. You know the saying, God helps them...

For the most part, plastic is sellable, but you will find that those who buy, do so in large quantities. I have added a second larger recycle bin for the plastic I pull from this stuff. At least it gets recycled and I can tell people that every part of the computer gets recycled.

So in other words, I put it on the curb on recycle day.

IEI plastics is one of the larger ABS plastic buyers out there. But your gonna need some quantity if you want to sell. Prices can vary from .10/lb to .20/lb. I am sure there are other markets where you can get more but this is where ABS plastic usually floats. But just a note, you will also have to bale the material.

My yard takes printers as shred. So I just pull out the ink carts and high grade boards and send the rest to shred pile. Ink carts I turn into staples for the $2 each max 10 a month credit and use that credit to buy ink for my printer.

Does anyone know if there are companies for hire to process ABS plastic into bails? Is is possible to simply pay someone who has the machinery to do it for you? If so, how much does that type of service cost? ANY info is appreciated!

My City has a "Green" can for recyclables. They take #1-7 plastics. Made my day to learn this. I now have two of them to fill and they are emptied bi-weekly. Check with some local disposal companies and see if any of them offer a similar service.

I too have wondered what to do with laptop screens. I may regret this but I will share anyway.

If the screen is in good condition (and even if it’s not) it or the parts can be re-used. It’s best to handle them with care and not scratch them or remove "the good" stuff. A new screen from the factory can cost $60 + install. One from me is free. You just have to find a market for them. Currently I take mine to a new and local computer/laptop repair shop that specializes in screen repairs and I "give" them the screens. It’s my objective to gain them as an e-waste client in the process. It’s a new store so will see how it goes. Some shops may not even want to deal with you...

I also take the cartridges and give them to office max (I believe... I have a family member do it) and I think they give $3 each and will take upwards of $30 a month worth.

Check with your town or city's web site just to be sure. I thought the same thing until I checked my city's web site the other day. To cut to the chase, it's actually illegal here for the trash collectors to even pick up most, if not all, e-waste. So I had to find another way to get rid of the stuff.

I have personally never heard of this service that does anything like this, but I am not saying it is not out there. I am sure if you had a friend with a baler, they would probably let you use it, but i would never pay for baling cheap material like plastic. You would probably end up in the negative. With that being said, a lot of cardboard buyers will give you a baler to bale cardboard with if you produce over 2000lbs+ a month. Of course you have to be a legitimate company and they usually decrease the the price of the cardboard by half. But you could bale other material in the baler as well. Like plastic, haha.

Seroiusly? It is illegal for your town to recycle plastic? Because that is clearly what I was talking about. Not e-waste.

Please don't quote part of what I say. When quoting me please incluse the entire post.

Were to start? first, if you have been scrapping e-waste for a year then you should know what to do with printers, brake them down and pull every thing out that can be sold motors, circuit boards, wires, steel ect. broken lcd screens go in the trash. Now plastic is a diffrant story. It will depend on how much plastic you get, if it's a small amount then just put it out with the trash, if it's a large amount then try to find a plastic recycler close to you, they might not buy it but they might take it off your hands for you. Worst cast you might have to pay to dump it at the landfill. I wish I could put my plastic out for the recycling truck but I produce about a pick-up truck load every 7-10 days, if anybody wants to buy some plastic cheap let me know.
