    surface layer of Co-Cr-Pt alloy is 40-50% platinum, and the layer is ~30 nm thick. and I estimate one platter has at most 2.2 mg Pt. you've just spent an hour of time to reclaim 10 cents of platinum,

    THis was already posted here in it's complete form, but this is the condensed version. If you continue to break them down you will have more platters to sell, hang on to what you have till you have enough to make it worth selling.
