This may sound sappy but I do it to recover resources. If I see a nail or a screw on the road, I will pick it up. Because I want to get paid for it? No. In the grand scheme of things it does not make much difference. I just do not want to see it go to waste in a landfill, or to see it disappear by landing in the dirt and eventually sinking out of sight. I am by no means an environmentalist whacko, to me it is just flat common sense. Even as big as this dirtball we all live on is, we still have a finite amount of natural resources, and it just makes sense to reuse them when we can. Even though I may not get paid for it, I do not have a problem with throwing an extra piece of shred in the batch I am taking in, or an extra brass fitting in the bucket, as the most important thing is it got recycled. This may also sound corny, but I have thought several times how I would feel if some of my scrap got stolen. An my thought is as long as it got turned in and recycled, I would not blow a gasket. I would not be thrilled about it, but my main goal is to see the stuff get recycled. Now, if I get paid for it, that is icing on the cake.

PS. Also, for some insane reason I just like to take things apart.
