It's been a few months since I posted but I'm still at it. I had a service ticket today and me and a coworker had to install a new battery backup and remove the old one. I got to keep the old one. The pic below is the one we removed and the customer has 3 more they will be replacing in the next two months that are much bigger. I'm guessing the one below is around 1200 pounds.

I wanted to share some more pics of the UPS above. The top part had a 15 inch toroidal transformer and was super heavy. The next cabinet down contained all of the big power boards and the other 6 were full of batteries. 112 pounds of batteries in each of the 6 cabinets. They're not hard to take apart, just a lot of heavy lifting. I'm going to start checking around on battery prices but most places are usually .20 a pound.

I took apart a big one similar in weight to this one. I had sooooo little to do I disassembled all the coils and windings to get the #2 cu out. I don't recommend doing that. 73, thanks for sharing, Mike

Mike I've taken some smaller ones apart before but didn't get much copper out of them. I just weighed this one and it's 125 pounds and the center is filled with epoxy? Not sure but it would have to go in order to get to the copper. I might save it for a rainy day.

Yea the hammer you have in the pic probably won't do the job.........I picked up a big EASTWING roofing hammer in some scrap and it weighs probably 2 to 3 times what a normal cheap hammer weighs and has a longer "shaft" to give more leverage.........It is kinda awkward working in smaller spaces but for knocking the **** out of something it does the job.........If you could get it stood upright and braced properly a sledge might do the job...........Usually I cut away some of the exopy/glue before I go to hammering

    ITT 601 KSU/1A2 phone system

I installed a phone system last week in an old building that was being remolded. This old phone system was mounted on a board in a back room and the GC said I could have it.

These systems were still being installed in 84 and I got to install a few of them. You gotta love the old technology. Each phone required a 25 pair cable!

So I have an hour and a half invested in the 15 inch transformer from the UPS above. My 3 pound hammer and about 20 whacks removed the center plug.

The first layer of plastic and copper have been removed. The bolt cutters help a lot.

I'm sure there are easier ways of doing this but I'm using what I have. I'll be getting 1 or 2 more of these soon and I was curious to see how much copper is in one.

It's been awhile since i did one. I can't remember if i broke it like you would a ferrite.

Nowadays i think i would cut it around the middle of the outside with a 4" angle grinder. The 1/16th inch thick metal cutting wheels work so well that i use them for a lot of things when i'm scrapping.

Yes Mike it did get faster this afternoon. I was able to finish removing the second layer of plastic and copper in 30 minutes. I haven't weighed the copper yet but the metal center was 80 pounds. I'm guessing 5 pounds for the center plug and the plastic wrappings so there should be 40 pounds of #2 copper. I have no idea how much copper is going for right now. It's been a while since I had any to sell.

39.5 pounds of #2 copper in the first pic from the big round transformer above.

Since copper is up I decided to drag my horizontal band saw out and start cutting my transformers. I can set one up in the saws vise and work on other things while it's cutting. The second pic has some #1 I stripped and another bucket with about 50 pounds of #2 from transformers.

I'll check but I don't think the yards I go to have a bare bright category. I will be making some phone calls tomorrow. Thanks.

I found 15 more toroidal transformers in a milk crate. They're a little bigger than a baseball. My plans were to cut it with my bandsaw, spread it apart with a crowbar and unwind the copper.
45 minutes later I had 1 pound 9 ounces of copper and the core was 1 pound 12 ounces of laminated steel.

I will be going today to buy a few cutting wheels for my angle grinder and do what Hills suggested.
