help laptop repair any1 do this

I had a drop off this morning of 12 laptops three were vista hp dv series .nice laptops. while checking on of them them lol it just turned on. and started beeping at me .so I installed a hdd and memory( lol they were for the scrap bins and apparently work lol) . when I turned it on the screen had vertical lines of different colors on a white background. so I hooked it up to a monitors and it seems to work fine lol. so I was playing with it and randomly the screen came to life and worked great. BUT as soon as I moved the laptop the screen started messing up ( kinda like playing with the vertical hold on old tube TV's) then went white agien . my questions is the screen its self looks fine .is ths caused by a loose cable? or a bad boards? any1 know if this is worth fixing its a hp dv9700 . I need a new laptop is why im wondering if its worth having it repaired

Totally worth it! and looks like you might have one or two for practice to boot XD! First thing I would try though, is disconnecting all power and drain remaining power, clear the CMOS, etc... by holding down the power button for like 30 sec or so.... or just push it a few times. Then fire several shots of contact cleaner in all directions into the body of the laptop itself (not the LCD) at the hinges and along the back. Auto grade contact cleaner is like 5 bucks at wally world so I never hesitate to spend a can, and it's never let me down! That's it 80% of the time. Few minutes to dry and power up.

Edit: If still no go, try taking off the access for ram/wireless/bluetooth cards and and unload towards the hinges again. Most LCD screens plug into the mobo right there. Congrats on the score

HP DV series laptops are plagued by faulty Nvidia GPU chips. Google "HP Nvidia lawsuit".

The good old HP DV series. We get a lot of these in here for the exact reason you are getting them.
Actually we have one hanging in our front window as a display.

As was already mentioned the graphics chip comes loose from the board quite often.

We do repair these, but it is an expensive process.

As they get hot, the soldier gets hot and starts to melt.
When that happens and it cools off and cracks form in the soldier ruining the connection.

There are 2 fixes for this. One is called a reflow and the other is called reballing.

Without getting too technical, I will try to quickly explain the difference.

Reflow and reballing both require a total tear down of the machine and removal of the motherboard.

Reflowing basically heats up the soldier to the point of softening it enough to re-establish the connection.
The resulting connection is never as strong as the original connection was in the first place.

Reballing involves the removal of the old soldier and basically totally removing the chip and replacing it back on the board.

Really what it comes down to with the DV series laptops is that they are some sharp looking units with a terrible flaw.

The machine we use to do this cost us over $2000.00. We use it a lot in gaming rigs where heat is always a factor.

A lot of those DV series laptop are more expensive to repair than to just dump it and start over. That is for the consumer anyway.
Shops can pick these machines and repair them on their own time when it is a little slow and resell them and get their money back.

HP is taking a major hit for these machines. We have seen this in their low end and higher end machines from the DV series.

There is one caveat that a person has to watch out for----

Because of this "known" problem, some shops are defaulting to this problem without testing for other less ominous problems such as bad ram, bad hard drive, etc.....

well I don't think its the chip because when used with a external monitor it works perfect. droping it off at my repair guy today .and its really not costing me anything to fix it

That's a good deal then. Probably a easy fix.

Like I said, a lot of techs just chuck them aside assuming that the chip is the problem.

We don't do that. We bench test everything that comes to us.

The DV9700 will probably make you a good machine then.

The only suggestion I would give is that you get a good extended life battery.

Also keep it cool. Like putting it on a laptop tray instead of sitting it on a blanket.
