The only ones I have found with the gold in them has had the processor core soldered to the heat spreader (as seen in pics). I had the thought it was for the solder to stick to the heat spreader.
Other than that I don't know, but please open up a 775 P4 and see if anyone can make sense of it. Because it appears to be gold plating?
