SGIs used a MIPS architecture CPU and an IRIX(UNIX type) OS. They were in extensive operation by high end users like NASA, high dollar medical facilities(like brain scans and studies etc), places where they required the utmost in graphics rendering. The IRIX OS is being discontinued now, along with the MIPS processors. It's a shame to just scrap that machine as they're no doubt still in use the world over, and parts will become precious to any who still need them
