SGIs used a MIPS architecture CPU and an IRIX(UNIX type) OS. They were in extensive operation by high end users like NASA, high dollar medical facilities(like brain scans and studies etc), places where they required the utmost in graphics rendering. The IRIX OS is being discontinued now, along with the MIPS processors. It's a shame to just scrap that machine as they're no doubt still in use the world over, and parts will become precious to any who still need them

I agree, I kind of felt bad scrapping it. I did check to see if any of the parts have much re-sale value, but it seems like they are slow sellers. I might put a few items on ebay, and see what happens.

The MIPS CPU's are nothing special as far as scrap value, soldered to the cpu boards and kind of small like a P4 or similar CPU.
However the two backplane boards are spectacular!!! Tons of gold plating and lots of gold plated connectors. Definitely higher grade than anything I have ever seen, plus the two weigh about 16 lbs. Also the main power connectors are as big as my fingers, and I think they are solid silver (non-magnetic, not copper, not plated, look like silver, I will get them checked with XRF).
Actually the scrap value will be closer to $600-700, more if those connectors are really solid silver.

Also I recently got another contact who is offering me the same type of equipment, plus a lot more. Hopefully I can make a deal on those also.
