Thanks I didn't know that the connector bits were gold, I've been throwing them away, oops. However that silvery bit on upper left motherboard in the third pic. That's aluminium and its easy to break off, I recommend breaking it off and placing it with aluminium, as for graphics cards; sometimes they have aluminium screwed on top of them above the gold fingers. Its usually large, and sometimes you can find a large section of copper on the inside.
Nice job, thanks for taking the time to educate us.
This was very informative. I learned I put stainless steel in with my aluminum dangit! I do have a question for you though: Prior to sending your Motherboards, peripherals, etc. do you cut all the gold off them, or sell them as is? Thanks again for this great tutorial :)
The short answer is no you don't remove all the gold, the gold bits make the boards have the value they have.
There's a lot more to it than that but you can do some more reading in other threads to help your knowledge. For now I suggest you hold onto your boards until you know more and can judge what is best for your business. Mike.
I was told that there was gold plated material in the laser reader casing. Here is a pic, tell me what you think.

the casing and 3 pins on the bottom look gold plated,
the stuff to the right looks like brass/stainless
interesting thanks! I am also finding nice ribbon cable with gold plated ends and boards in laptop dvd drives. What types of boards are these, mid grade like the desktop variety?
CD/DVD Grade check Ewasted. I think it is gold plating, I'm sure someone on here has a gold purity checking kit or what ever you want to call the kit.
:)Really a benchmark in identification for the newcomers like myself.. :)
Thanks.
Hi folks, new to the forum. Almost all the pictures in this thread at not showing up and I wanted to know why? I want to learn but without the being able to see the pics I'm a bit lost. Thanks!
Thanks Mechanic688....It was the computer settings. I can view them fine now.
Low grade is usually listed or graded by color; low grade is usually brown-tan color. Some may be whiteish,

Hello all,
This is my first post here. I know well about gold and PMs in computers, however not know much about other metals. I know hard disks have Al, some stainless steel (some magnetic, some not). How about PCI card brackets? Do you separate those? They are magnetic but a little too soft for steel. Is there any place to find quick guide fom recognizing different metals and alloys?
Welcome shmandl and most of your questions are addressed in other old threads so the very best answer is read the old threads. Its up to your buyer as to what to seperate from the boards(pci for example). Please start a thread in the introduction part of the forum and tell us a little about yourself and experience in scraping. Mike.
How do you tell what is palladium and what is platinum and silver. Wondering if there is an easy way to tell what they are and keep stalking up. Please help
I want to know how to tell what those different little metals are on the boards. I want to start collecting the palladium and platinum. if u could help
PTS, what's this pic?? sure makes me hungry, caught myself licking my monitor,,, I think it's your #4

This resource was suggested by Flimits. It seems to be a very in-depth document of scrapping electronics. Recommended study for anyone starting (and those who have been at it for awhile) in electronics.
Scrap Parts Comp Identification
i was wondering if anyone was familiar with 5 pin solid state protectors. i have a garbage can full of used one and 4/5 of the pins/plugs are gold. i opened one up and the gold plug runs through the entire body of the plastic portion. so if anyone has any information regarding scrapping one of these id appreciate. oh yea I'm new here. first post. whoop.whoop.
Picked up 25 towers today mostly Dels, and was like....wtf am I going to do with these..... Thank you SO much for taking the time out to put all of this info together and to the admins for making it a sticky. Breaking them down and separating them as we speak!
This forum is the best thing since copper...
So those things that are sometimes screwed to an AL heatsink with legs that go down into the board are also considered an IC chip? Sorry for my bad description.
Do you mean these?

If so, those are just heatsinks. If not, do you have any photos?

They are transistors if these are what your referring too.

Just a quick request could someone post some pics of some low grade boards been scraping awhile just new to the e-waste game. Thanks mark
Better would be get a few more posts in so you include photos. Take good photos of what you are wondering about and start a new thread. For the real answer on the valued of those boards contact your chosen buyer and include photos.
I can not emphasis enough how much easier it is to have good photos to work with. Also there is a sticky thread on how to post photos on the forum. Mike
I have never seen one before.
