PT Scrapper,
What an excellent post mate!
Although i like to scrap mainly copper, This has given me some much needed information.
You have answered so many questions for me all in one thread!
Cheers mate.
what a great thread.
Found this post very informative and definitely cut my questions down by a 1/4th. Thanks again.
I vote this as the best post of 2011, and gets the golden ataboy.
Thanks for the kind words olddude and everyone else on here. Im glad I could contribute to this forum.
(e)eproms with the glass window and gold centers are worth $50/lb and up.
Thanks for that, I have a bunch of them and knew they had to be worth more than the ceramic non gold window ones.
one thing i never fully understood, about the gold fingers on the cards and processors
are they pure gold, or gold plated copper?
plated and the older the part usualy the thicker the plating.
yes and yes
all of the gold used to plate electronics is 'pure'. and it is plated over a variety of base metals. copper is the one most often used. however, copper is now designated as a precious metal. so, technically, we can no longer call it a base metal.
I know I'm bumping an old thread but, I had to say thank you for a great reference.
They are 22k Gold plated onto copper with a very fine layer of nickel sandwiched in between.
The nickel is there because copper can "absorb" the Gold over time...the nickel stops this.
Hope that helps?
Thanks for the great post PTS. I just picked up a Pentium 2 CPU in a plastic case. The pic showing one taken apart was very helpful!
Thank you so much PTS - this has helped me a lot in breaking down that truckload full of computers. One question, and sorry if it's a stupid one (couldn't find it on a search): Can you take off the heat sinks and any copper, or do they have to stay intact on the boards? Thank you again!!
If their hi-grade boards leave it on but if your talking low-grade, pluck away.
Man, this sure brought back some memories ;) It's been a while since I've broken down many computers, but when I lived in TN i'd buy lots of surplus computers, some so old I told em once at a NASA place in AL they shoulda been Payin ME to haul it off! I'd take it home and sort through it, that was fun, I was looking for working computers, and the ones not worth messing with i'd remove the parts that looked worth saving, and stack the box with just the Mobo and power supply in an old tractor shed down by the barn, not knowing what i'd ever do with it. After several years that stack got fairly large ;) and when it started coming close to time to move, I began to wonder what i'd ever do with it. I'd already sold most of the gold CPU's and other parts i could sell on Ebay, but that stack of cases with motherboards in it began to worry me, due to it being considered toxic waste. I began tearing down those old cases and tossing the boards into a pile, and hauled the metal cases to the scrapyard, a 4x10 trailer, with more in the truck, filled 4 times, but that stack of motherboards just got wayyy too big to hide. Even though it was mid 2006 I still didn't find anybody to buy the boards, and didn't want to send them to the landfill, but finally talked to a computer recycler downtown who "did me the favor" ;) of taking them. It was a Ford Ranger long bed fairly filled, and while me and another guy were unloading them, the fella says I coulda hauled it to Atlanta to sell, and at that time, the price would have just about paid for the trip. Things have sure changed
thanks
thanks
Hii! Im new here and found this sticky very helpful but am looking for more info and was wondering why there isnt another like this but with lots more information such as:
-Scrapping terms
-Examples of differnet types of metals, or what the average scrap yard classifies it as
-what counts as electric motors
-how to sort copper wire or if you even need to
If there is can someone link? IF not i'll just keep reading and reading and reading =)
There is an introductions section here and we like it when new members start out with an introduction. Let us know where you are and what led you to scrapping.
An answer to your question I would say this is an evolving forum and those type stickys may be added later. Like all other new members I recommend you take the time to read the old threads. All your questions will most likely be answered and you will learn much more than you expect. Do your self the favor and take advantage of the valuable free information just waiting on you, Mike.
What can I do with the ribbon cables after I cut off the ends? Keep them or toss?
Also, should I keeep the brushless DC motor from fans and cd drives?
Ribbon cable is low grade copper wire. My yard pays 47 cents a pund for it. The other stuff I throw in my motor bucket.
Why would you toss copper??? That would be like driving down the road and tossing a $20.00 bill out the window.Quote:

Another thread full of lot's of information. Thanks for taking the time to detail this info.
LOL People throw everything away seems like. I pick up computers often because it has a virus or just needs cleaned. I had a couple call me awhile back to haul everything they owned out of an apartment because they had mice. lol My cats were waiting at home in the yard where I unloaded the stuff.
Absolutly great info. This helps me so much. Thanks.
OK, on the ribbin cable ends, I have taken a few of these apart and the pins looked silver to me, didn't see any gold. Can someone explain? Also I brake down a lot of printers and the print head has a mid grade board and the board has a peace of paper looking thing pluged into it that seems to have gold on it. Is this worth saving and dose anybody buy this? thanks for your help.
#1- the ribbon cables plug into the motherboard on one end and those pins are gold and they plug into the gold pins on the back of a CD drive or Floppy drive and gold plugs into gold.
#2- That piece of plastic out of the printer has gold dots and sometimes gold traces and I never throw them away, someone will buy them. Here's a couple of different ones I've come across, the third board is from a small dish receiver amp and board #4 (it's ram memory) came from a high end printer.

Yes, the 2nd board is the one I am talking about, the plastic attached to the top, it dose have the gold dots and on one end it looks to have little gold fingers. Thank you for your post, I've been saving them, looks like it's going to take alot of them to make a lb.
Great post. You have mention almost parts of your computer. Thanks for sharing.
THank you that is a very good post I am trying to learn how to best scrap recycle Computers E waste and Other various recyclables
hey guys, i run into a link that might be of some use. it is basically the same thing as the original post of this thread, but i think it has (maybe) a little bit more information. hope it helps someone.
