Yes a vacuum like a lite bulb the term gas is definitely loose from me. CRTs have a large board box I have twisted off with no hiss but as you well know that often is not possible as these things really were not meant to be repaired in a user friendly way, some use a glass to thin at end ,they can crack just looking at it. as even when built in the 90's it was less money to just buy a new one . I do work out side and if size allows i do get a box a low cost bag to line box and after i am done tv goes in box with words on box TV does not work now that the town i collect from has a tv drop off I take advantage of it . I do not just bust to smithereens as whats the point , But sure i have opened many a tv that was busted up in side.

cut the red wire & never touch tv wile you cut it - just cut fast with insulated lines men . crack yoke & also never touch whilst you do that also. don't breath till complete

You don't have to touch the T.V, if still charged it can arc over your wire cutters, enter your hand and exit at the least resistive point to ground. Please do as Mechanic688 says and be safe or eventually wish that you were.

I understand what your saying ,I am wearing linesmen gloves using lines men clippers wearing nice thick sole boots (not standing in water or on grass) and standing on a found in garbage rubber pizza floor mat (if i am at home) on the road i use a lowes rubber nealing pad , If you were to hand me a live wire it stops at me . Sure no gloves bare foot in a puddle of water using clippers with broken cracked rubber handle i would be dead meat .

When I was a kid of 19, I worked with an electrician he was probably lazy but he would never shut the power down when changing outlets he just warned me just only touch one wire at a time.I am not going to debate his Battle as even i shut the power at box , but I still handle the possibility of live power the same to this day I always am set up so i am not able to ark.
Even if i use power tools i stand on wood like my my father did.
One may say i don't take enough precautions but for me it works i cut that wire in a blink of an eye & pull away like a cowboy one hand till diffused Now to any newbies this is just IMO for me ,for you do as the others say as per post #17

I break the gas vacuum first, mostly by just wiggling the circuit board or smacking the plug end with a hammer or pliers, facing away from it & covering my eyes.
Once all of the airs been sucked in & its safe to work on it.

I use a Phillips screwdriver to undo the two stainless steel bands.
Then I twist the yoke sideways till its loose & pull it off.
Pop the two black metal clips holding the two iron ceramic rings on the yoke & then I pop out the inner copper coils out of the plastic.

The ceramic rings, I break it up with a hammer untill its broken all thru & the copper wire is still intact.
Then I keep sorting thru the loose copper coil to get rid of all the ceramic, that can be checked with a magnet.

response to this post - you stated " two iron ceramic rings on the yoke " in all my TV & CRT's I found them all to be steel and I sell as short I only mention this in case you don't realize they are a valuable part of the yolk / once you have a bucket of them.
The vacuum I find this works well , pop off the red rubber cap attached to transformer - once off take a small punch & pop it in to that spot that the rubber cap was pluged . I find it never breaks the glass and seems a safe way to allow air to suck in

PS
use a punch with a nice rubber handle as should the hammer also be .
