I get more washers/dryers than anything else.

I'd say you're spot on about the theory of scrappers only being out the night before/day of trash pickup.

Maybe the hot water heaters are being hauled away by the repairman? They aren't hard to replace but people are lazy so in comes the repairman.

I don't think they're as easy as you say. Most people don't know which end of a screwdriver does the work, let alone are prepared to take on sweating pipe. Plus the darn things are heavy, so if they don't have the right kind of cart, they're not gonna try to haul one out of a basement on their own. It isn't laziness, it's knowing your limitations. For most people, those limitations stop well short of a major plumbing repair like swapping out a hot water heater.

Remember, we scrappers are an unusual lot. Most of us have WAY more experience taking stuff apart than the average person. We know how to use tools, and probably have many more than the average person does. And we may not be any stronger than average, but we have way more experience wrasslin' heavy stuff and know how to do it without getting hurt (hopefully...)

Personally, what I tend to find are washers and dryers. Only found a couple of hot water heaters in the years I've been curb shopping. I think that hauling the old one away is part of the service a plumber typically offers. Fridges, eh, not too often unless they're the small ones, and I tend to leave those alone since I don't have the refrigerant recovery equipment, don't want to get involved with it, and sure don't need the $10K fine!
