You may want to check with your township for their rules, I know that any kind of solicitation where I live requires a permit. Never put anything in a mail box, that is considered a federal crime. I have put a note or two in peoples doors asking about their scrap, sometimes I get called back sometimes not. It never hurts to knock on the doors asking neither.
