520's Scrap Finds - Page 2

For now my strategy to not have to deal with so much plastic is to leave some metal or boards attached to the plastic so I can get away with putting it in the shred pile. Also I have learned that 5 disk CD changers aren't worth breaking down unless they are also a receiver/amp. If it's just a strait CD changer it is nothing but plastic.

VCR machines & older CD changers have a nice cast alum chunk where u have that metal piece sitting on the brown board shown in the 1st pic.

now the work begins!

So I am not going to be posting every single pickup I do here on this thread but I wanted to address this one. I run a few ads on Craigslist one of them being a "free appliance removal" ad in the "for sale - appliances" section. I get about 3-5 responses a week from this ad and end up with 2-3 pickups's that work out for me. Now it's not big money. $14-18 for a refrigerator or set of washer and driers. But it makes me contacts who often have other things like electronics for me to take as well. I am always sure to let them know everything else I take before I make the pickup.

Anyway long story short. This AC system is one of the better pickup's I have gotten from that appliance removal ad but I have gotten working TV's, Computers and occasionally some good non scrap metal items. Even just my standard appliance removal where I make 14-18 at least it pays for my gas for the day which allows me to hustle up either more scrap metal or some other form of work that I do.

Well you got me to go outside in the rain to check it out and it sure is stainless. Now I am kinda kicking myself because I threw one of these same washers strait into the shred pile 2 weeks ago without checking.

Well I went to do another appliance pickup today from "Offer Up" which didn't work out because the guy wasn't home at the agreed upon time.

But on the way to his house I noticed a roll off dumpster filled with Gondola shelving. Apparently a local feed store was changing locations and they just threw out the shelving.

Stopped to ask the manager for permission. I got it and then got to work. Normally I sell this stuff for more than scrap but apparently my buyer is overstocked from taking shelving out of Toys R Us's after they closed down.

So I hauled 5 loads to the scrap yard. It would have hauled a sixth but someone else came by, saw the pile next to the dumpster and took it for themselves.

But they didn't take the wood shavings and 3 bags of chicken feed because I had left them in the dumpster. So at least my ladies are happy!

Not sure what I'll do with the wood shavings. Maybe compost then for the veggie garden.

I believe it's some sort of power board out of a telecom system but it looks like a video card, telecom board and power board had a baby.

Wonder if I can get Finger Board pricing for this?

"(Only need to remove OVERSIZED heatsinks, battery... metal bracket is OK)"

No mention of large transformers or capacitors!

I would check with the buyer about the transformers

So since I started picking up from this new contact of mine I have broken down maybe 100 DVD + 100 VHS and so far no adult movies...But I did get a sex ed tape! Mostly workout videos and kids movies.

This picture of the crying kid on Santa's lap is my best find yet in a VHS player.

Also here is a picture of my current work station. In trying to avoid moving the electronics I set up a little circle of containers so I can scrap everything out where it sits.

Well I have processed my first 4 pickup loads of E-waste(VHS, DVD, ACP, CD, Cable Modems, SAT Recievers, Routers, Record Players, Printers.

$250 worth of shred and prepared.

I won't be cashing in on anything besides iron/shred for the next few months but here are some pics of the boards, #2 wire, transformers, lead acid batteries and mixed metal that needs sorting(vcr heads, heat sinks, brass, cooper, alu etc.).

I am setting up a board sorting station this evening and i'll post some pics of that soon. Going to use a air hammer/chisel to blast off transformers small heat sinks and IC chips from the low grade boards.

Filling that fridge with garbage plastic is good way to ruin your relationship with your scrap yard.

Hobo is right. I have taken in 3 loads like this openly just loose in the bed of my truck. If there is metal or circuit boards attached to plastic they don't have a problem with it. They also take printers and plastic tub dish washers. I talked with the owner about what i planed to take in as shred and got a "I don't give a ****".

I figured someone would think I was hiding my plastic in the fridge but really it's just an easy way to store it before transport. If you scroll back through the thread I took some close up pics of the plastic items I am taking in as shred. But definitely people should check with their yard before bringing in such low grade shred.

DVD trays I leave the motor and low grade boards on. Plastic face plates I leave the board and a bit of wire on. VHS with plastic trays all i pull off is the vhs head and the transformer leaving the big low grade board and metal thing with all the plastic gears.

Since they take plastic tub dishwashers with motor and wiring removed I try to keep the metal to plastic ratio above what that would be which isn't too hard considering all there is, is a light sheet metal base, bracket running up the back side and 2 plastic coated wire racks inside.

Really if you think about it a refrigerator stripped of it's compressor, copper and wiring is mostly plastic, insulation and glass shelves with just a skin of thin sheet iron.

When I scrap a PC or server, any plastic that's on the outside stays on the outside. Any plastic on the inside goes back in plus I'll fill it the rest of the way with screws and small pieces of metal. My scrapped PC cases will weigh anywhere from 20 to 50 pounds when I get through filling them back up.

Since I am in ewaste mode I figured it was time to break down some servers and network switches that have been hanging around. Apparently not all servers have 2 CPU's and not all network switches are created equal. I don't know how the board on top even serves the same function as the 3 boards in front.
