Just checked for brass tea sets on ebay and it looks like none of them have been sold,... lots listed, but rarely sell. So, looks like the brass tea set will be relegated to the brass bucket and taken as scrap once the auction ends.

You seem to find all the cool stuff
Since I'm currently in south-west Louisiana, I think I'll drive over and get some of the goodies laying around

Nice! I love the old crap ethera. What is it? It looks like cards that say to buy war bond stamps now. Was it advertising or is it the actual stamps?

I bought the entire set for $5 and sold it on Ebay for $16 .
I try to keep my collections to a minimum ... the keyword is try. I mainly collect fox themed items, oddball tokens and coins, and sometimes an interesting stock or bond certificate.

t00nces2- Thanks for posting about your father. Yes, its one of those folks in the road where there is no replay. Between myself and my wife, we've walked it 3 times, it never gets any easier. Your advice is very sound. "Should've, could've, would've" doesn't cut it after people are gone.

This is not pointed towards t00nces2 but for us in general, from a Christian perspective, forgiveness is very important. Staying mad or even hating a person far after a hurt leads to nowhere. Its better to leave it in God's hands and move on. I have a very hard time "turning the other check" in the moment but that shouldn't be the end of the story.

I have a set of "high value" Iraqi peeps playing cards some place. Have never seen "Buy War Bonds" cards before. Neat!!

I also picked up a set of rims for a Jeep Wrangle. I asked what he wanted and I was told $10. I countered with $5 and he took it. I was really ambiguous about getting them because I will hold onto them too long trying to sell online, but I know I can dump them at the yard when I get sick of them. I have them listed for $100, but I am pretty flexible on the price.

I had probably the best garage sale score I have ever had today, and that is saying something. I was having a decent day. I picked up a Samsung 40" smart TV up for $60. I will probably take the TV we just bought back because neither the wife or I like the way the smart features work on it, and I'd rather spend $60 than $180.


So I'm driving around checking sales out and I come across another big sale. I walk up and find a silver plate brass platter with $1 on it and I pick it up. I am wandering around and I see another platter and it has $50 on it. No way! Behind it is a bunch of platters/trays in a pile with what I thought was another silver plate platter under the pile. I pull it out and head to find the seller and asked since the one platter is a dollar, is the other. She says, "No, that one is silver." I say, "No way!" She flips it over and there is a Sterlin hallmark. She says, "I want $15 for this." I can't get the money out fast enough! I thank her and apologize for saying it was silver plate, that I did not mean to mislead her, I honestly thought it was plate. I scram out of there.


I then stopped by another estate sale and picked up a bunch of silver plate that looks good enough I may list it or see if the wife wants to hang onto it to use.


Well, I get home and throw the platter on the scale and it says 9 pounds 11+ ounces. The way I figure it, it is probably $1,500 in silver!

I’ve been saving some sterling, and I wondered where you are selling yours to get some solid prices per ounce.

I have a coin shop that told me $10/oz. I think that is a bit low, so I am looking for a better rate. I talked to some estate sale guys I run into fairly regularly and have a couple of local leads. I am also a member of the Kitco forum (precious metal website), I know they will buy coins, and I am trying to see if Kitco will buy the platter. That may be the best place to sell, but I have yet to find out.

Thanks for the quick response! It helps to have a few ideas as I’ve really only dealt with jewelry sales. Like you, most jewelry comes from from garage sale finds and a few with my trusty metal detector. I must say that following your garage sale thread had inspired me to get up and out of bed on Saturday mornings.

Honestly, true silver is so rare that my assumption is that it is silver plate if it isn't steel. It was shiny and I thought she was selling it as an attractive useful plate. I doubt I even checked to make sure. In thirty years I think I have only run across that one platter that wasn't priced silver spot. I have bought some piles of silver plate odds and ends and once wound up with a plate, but true silver is so rare I don't even bother checking. Perhaps I should, but it seems a bit of a desperation move to look at the back of a plate or set that is priced at $80 to check for silver to be sneered at by the seller. You know they bristle at the thought of fingerprints on their exquisitely polished silver plated set.
