Gresham's law is slowly proving true of copper pennies , I am surprised the Gov has not tried to fool us into Zinc all around - all our coinage currency
To mint a penny it varies in cost year to year but for 2014 it cost 1.83 cents to make a penny including the cost of zinc so one OZ of zinc pennies is around .60 cents for Gov to make .
currently you can buy your own OZ of copper coins for $1 out of 999.9 Copper and some people pay as much as $3 and $4 I guess for what they feel are unique designs .
From research removing the zinc from a copper penny is doable , getting caught could land you in jail.
Gotta figure on the down low people are melting pennies
for profit.
