I watched a video that gave equal time to a law professor from a large US university and a respected police detective....I cant remember where I saw it, darn it, so I'm being vague.
BUT, the gist of the whole thing was, if you are charged with something, clam up. The professors point was that you will have plenty of time to tell your side of the story to the judge. But talking to the police won't have them drop the charges or otherwise get you off the hook. He gave plenty of examples of how well meaning, innocent conversations with the police would just get you in deeper.
The detective basically said, Yep, that's correct. Your best bet is to stay silent.
Now this is a little different situation than what we have here but it certainly is prudent to answer direct questions politely and let them do the talking.
Jon.
