Something to keep in mind; my dad also asks for a lead pencil. Working most of his life in construction, around the jobsite you used lead pencils and grease pencils (those marking sticks). That carried over into life away from the jobsite as well.

My father told me about being in the Army an officer asking him "What part of Maine are you from" just by the way my father talked. He is from southern Maine and does not have the heavy Maine accent, but it was enough.
