    old houses and barns with a lightning rod protruding from the roof will have a large braided copper cable running to a grounding rod sometimes several.
    Yep copper coated is the norm for the rods, but here in the states they started going to large alum. wire for the hookup wire on ground rods back about 15-20 years ago.
