However, to get back on subject, I suppose one could talk to their local humane society about picking up empty pet food cans. But I imagine that they would be hesitant to separate the cans from their regular trash for you, and like pet stores, they'd probably be more inclined to purchasing dry food.

I was going to say, the last time I visited our local one they had a pallet load of 40 lb bags of cat/dog food.
