I am no expert when it comes to storage auctions, but I thought that auctioneers didn't know what was in the units, till they ripped the lock off and had people start to bid on it?

The engines alone, depending on the shape, and motor cycle parts will bring in some nice change.

Depends, I guess. I'm working with a storage owner up here who has some potential foreclosures coming up. He knows exactly what's in them. He's not even auctioning; I get them.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Well, I do guess it is different in all areas then. I thought it was the job of the storage houses to do auctions to get the most possible for the units.

Sounds like a good deal you worked out though. Hopefully it will definitely play out well for you Mick. That would be awesome.

I've never done an auction, what could one expect to pay for an engine? I'd hate to go and bid and then worry I can't offload them.

I am no expert, so that would be a question for my father in law, but he would actually need to see what actual condition it is in. Someone could say it is in decent, but it could be in superb condition, or be in superb condition, and be worthless, etc.

Also, it depends on what makes, models, and years the engines can be for. Also, just depends on who you can sell it to as well.

I know re built engines go for almost as much if not more then new engines go for, so I would like to say a few hundred if it is still good, and can be put in as is, or even rebuilt.

George, common sense tells me that storage companies are not controlled by the feds, so then trickles down to the state and local municipalities. Storage companies opt for the auction style because in many cases it brings in more $$$ then if they sold the items outright or they don't want the hassle of selling it, also national chains have blanket policies so that every store is consistent and or protected.

Newattitude, Not sure if these are Honda car motors you are talking about or more like the lawnmower style. When looking at contents of storage units that are up for auction you usually only have about 30 seconds or less to evaluate so unless I see some markings on something and know for sure what I would be getting I estimate the value on the low end and play it safe. I can tell you that some of the Honda car motors like the Vtec bring good money to the "Tuner" crowd.

George? A rebuilt engine is never worth more then a brand new crate motor. Now if you rebuilt it with upgraded parts then yes. But thats comparing apples to watermellons. As far as japanese motors go. If you need one of these I would buy a japanese direct import motor. You can get a motor from japan for your toyota, honds, etc for less then half in most cases then you would pay for a new motor here int he states and it usualy has no more then 60k miles on it.

I would guess the bigger companies would do auctions, but I know quite a few people who run a basic "mom and pop" type storage unit, and they rarely do auctions.

from what I have seen most larger chain/franchise storage units will open the lockers and take out the valuables and auction them off separately. Then they will pile all the stuff they dont want off to the side and sell it dirt cheap.

they are in it for profit. Those shows on TV where they find tens of thousands of dollars worth of stuff in a storage locker seem to be pure Bullcrap.

I'm going to vote that they were motorcycle motors cause of the other motorcycle parts. But I'm just assuming.
