    buying junk cars?

I know it is best to get them free, but if you had to buy one what would you pay? Someone is trying to sell a 97 ford escort everything is good but the tranny. They want $300 obo. I would offer a lot less but was wondering what a good prcie would be?

Are you going to strip it? Scrap it as is? What is the going rate for a ton in your area?

I'm coming up with about 2,500 lbs for that car, so around here I'd get $225 as is.

My max would probably be $200. I'd make something off the aluminum, wire, radiator, heater core, cat, alt, starter, etc. then crush the rest.

However, I haven't done a car, so maybe someone can chime in if even $200 is too much.

Cars get $70 ton here. Figured I would strip the parts you mentioned. Maybe part some of it out since everything is good but the tranny.

Only $70 a ton dang thats low way low.I would say $100-150 at most. the car would bring if it weighed 2500 lbs at your yard $87.50 plus a converter worth $75=162.50 the you get aluminum wheels and starter and such.So if i was you i after my figures i would only go $125 at most.

I get $185.00 a ton for cars. I seperate the battery $4.00. If it has aluminum wheels I break down the tires and get $10.00 for each wheel. I throw wheel weights and lead cable ends in a bucket for later. I also take the battery cables and any easy wires or aluminum. I don't take the radiators out, I think they take too long to get out and get clean for the pay off. I haven't been taking the converters off but I am now thanks to your post Focker.
I would give $150.00 at the most.

The prices here are really low. I think it is because i live in the middle of no where. Also it is the only scrap yard for 80 miles. This why i am thinking of selling my copper on ebay. #1 goes for $2.20 lb.

I'm pretty lucky in that respect we have at least 5 yards within 40 miles plus some individuals that buy copper and pay very well.

The only way they can make money is to "part them out" by selling engines, tranny, rear ends, etc.
I am in SC and I think we use the same Scrap Yard, as they are paying what you said, $12 per 100lbs.
I try to make a "Fair Offer" and maybe pay more than the avg. "scrapper" . I usually make sure the car is pretty well "Whole" and then based on the vehicle weight found in the door data tag, I pay as much as $10 per 100. Ie; 3000lbs = $300 offer.
I bring it home, strip it down for "Quicky items" and then scrap the rest. I generally make about $200 per car that way and can do it in about half a day.
I wish I could get more cars, because $200 profit, per car, adds up at the end of the week, lol!!

it is so easy to sell cars to these Junk Cars removal services is one of the primary reasons why this course of action to dispose of junk cars is preferred over any other option that is available to car owners.

    what???

Last summer when scrap was real high I had an opportunity to buy "trade ins" from a used car lot.
These were too far gone to put them on their lot for sale so I could have bought all they came up with for $350. ea.
I would have needed a 2 place trailer to make it worthwhile as I would had to deliver them about 45 mile one way, that kind of mileage it would take 2 at a time to make money. I had it figured to pull the easy stuff and cats and would still make over $100-150. each.

My expense would have been a 3/4-1 ton truck and a 2 place trailer. The guy doing it now has a big two place trailer and uses a tractor and stacks them 2 high by smashing the roofs. Hauls a total of 4 at a time. I just wasn't ready to pull the trigger on that expense.

You might check with used car lots to see if they will sell you their "junk" trade-ins. You know the wrecked ones and blown motors,,,

So you are thinking to buy ford escort that's nice as you can earn some money from it and if i say about price according to condition which you have specified here i think $150 is good. It is nice to earn cash for junk car or you can use it by replacing the old tranny.
