    Maximum Amount to be made on 97 Ford Taurus GL Station Wagon

    So I have still have both cars described in previous post: Scrapping 2 Cars
    But I had some more questions about the Tausus

    Car: 1997 Ford Tausus GL Station Wagon
    Millage: 180k-200kish
    Trans: 4 Speed Automatic
    Engine: 3.0 Liter V6 w/SFI
    ----Issue: Blown Head Gasket
    Curb Weight- 3505 Pounds







    Near New Tires


    I paid $320 for the car from a friend (figured scrap value on it is about $380) so I have listed on Craigslist for $750 as is....


    The tires are near new so if I were to scrap it I would keep them and list them for like $250 on Craigslist (with rims)

    Is the $750 more than I will get via scrapping it?

    I have had several people offering lower then my asking price (what do you expect.... its Craigslist....) But I am wounding what exactly **roughly** would you think I would make off of it scrapping it/ selling parts?

    I was figuring pulling:

    CAT
    RIMS/Tires
    Radiator
    O2 sensors
    The 1 good fender
    Computers
    Mirrors
    Any Larger Motors
    Wiring
    maybe trans....
    any other thoughts?

    Thoughts on money I will make scrapping it (spending decent about of time) **rough estimate of what I would make scrapping please** compared to washing my hands of it and selling it whole to private party?

    At first glance I thought you had aluminum wheels, but I seen the holes behind so they are steel, if you have a buyer for the tires it's worth taking them off and you can get short iron for the wheels. You also have to have a way to dismount them which probably won't be free.

    That car has two cats on the passenger side behind the front wheel, about $40 apiece

    If it were mine I'd cut the cats, drain the gas, get the wheels, check under the back seat for treasure and haul it in.

    If I were you though I'd get the radiator, alternator compressor and anything bolted to the motor, you will get at worse breakage for all that stuff. Rip out the dash and door panels and the carpet and get all the wire you can. Also heater core and the little air conditioning radiator and blower motor is in the dash. Throw all the plastic in the back.

    Before my volume of cars got beyond my means I done most of them this way and just from wire alone we were getting 200+ a week.

    That Taurus wagon (it's been a while) should bring 350ish give or take 25 at my prices on the body, they are heavier than they look.

    My advice rip it apart, be careful and have fun

    I'd sell the rims for replacements (I sometimes sell Saturn Steel Wheels on CL (once i've worn out the tires) and sell them for 2 for $35....)

    Doing what you suggest what would the total scrap price you think I would be looking at?

    $200- Tires (went low)
    $080- CATS
    $???- Wire
    $???- Radiator
    $???- Alternator/Compressor/ Other things on Engine
    $???- Heater core, air conditioning radiator, and blower motor

    Northwest, IN (Valpo Area).....

    And I'm just trying to get maximum profits off this.... **Since I've never scraped cars or that before** I've scraped Computers, strait scrap metal, and anything else I can get my hands on the side of the road.... just trying to learn the ins/outs of the best way to make the most $$$ while scrapping cars

    Keep in mind that $350 shell price keeps dropping as u remove items(trans,wheels). I say give it a week on cl as its tax time. If you can verify good trans then yank it(easier said then done) compare salvage yard prices 1st. If they selling them for like $200 then dont bother.think $200 for steel wheels is far fetched. Other lil gems n keep it moving. Think $750 including knick knacks(will have to wait for sales). Or do nothing n quick flip for $525 cl n go make more money! I do the quick flips ALOT. Can pay $325 for a car n have my buyer pick it up for me n pay me like $425 depending. I just take the battery, pcm, crap they won't miss n keep it moving. $100 for 30 minutes...sometimes :-)

    I was saying like $250 with the brand new tires.... so less then the tires by themselves and toss in the Rims

    And that's what I'm thinking.... if I can flip it without doing anything.... but I don't want to loose out on extra $$$ that I could make if I sell it to the crusher..... This money I'm looking at using to get a nice RUST FREE car dolly down south

    You're kidding, right? Maybe you would like Cory to travel from Jonesboro Ar. to your place in Indiana and just do all the work for you. Then when he's finished he can give you all the money from this little project and travel back home on his own dime. OR maybe you can do some this on your own. All by yourself. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. And learn a few things along the way. Come on, dude. You gotta put forth a little effort of your own. Nobody can tell you exactly what these things will sell for. YOU are the only that can tell us your total. After the sale.

    If you're time is free, the more you tear apart, the more you'll make in scrap. pretty simple.

    Aluminum average price .50/#
    Copper wire .75-.95/#
    Battery .25/#
    Alternator .25/#
    Starter .25/#


    figure out how fast you can do it, and see what's worth your time. The only time I play the "what's it worth" game is when I'm buying, once I have it, get it processed and gone. Put up a part out thread while you are tearing down. put up cheap prices, above scrap, below auto salvage price. what moves moves, what doesn't scrap.

    (I really shouldn't say anything because there is still some parts in the garage from my last partout.. in september. It's the same truck that I currently drive though, so I don't feel bad)

    2nd, I can't see me getting 200 for any set of tires, I had a new set of all terrains a year or so ago for $100. I get $10 a tire for good tires from my buyer, they sell them for $25. Tires for me is what's worth my time, I could get more, but that would mean dealing with dozens of phone calls and dozens of dumb@$$ questions about tires sooooo, I sell them to someone else. Bottom line I can buy a car in the time it takes to sell one set of tires or even worse waiting on a no show for two hours.

    3rd as for the take off stuff it will depend on your prices which will mainly depend on your relationship with your yard

    IF I were to be gutting that car this is the approximate math:
    $320 on body (this taking into car having a bunch removed)
    $100-$125 on Tires - and would cost me $12 to have removed
    Rims would be tossed back in the car
    $80: Converters total
    $7 on the Alternator
    $5 on A/C Pump
    $35 on Wiring
    $7 bucks if you get both heater cores and rads
    $5 or so in A/C lines, condenser etc
    $12 on Battery

    $559 to $584 Ballpark
    Profit $239 to $264 at $320 Buy Price.

    But as it has been said- your BEST learning "advice" is experience. Dig in, Gut her hard and see what she brings you!
    I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

    I completely understand the "different area different prices".... but i was just looking for a bit of guidance

    Yeah, I understand what you are saying, but like I said I'm looking at selling it outright instead of scrapping it myself.

    I've bought and sold tires a couple times.....
    In my dealing with near new used tires.... I bought 2 Deulers down in Florida for $60.... was going to put them on my VUE.... but then found a matching set of 4 tires in southern IN and sold the Deulers on CL for $150..... thus what I'm looking at price wise on selling them.... I am use to the idiots calling about CL postings but hay I'm fine with making $$$

    2. You already had your answers before you heard our suggestions
    3. Then you ask another?

    I'm not trying to beat you up, but you can't go into a conversation asking a question, then contradict answers you receive. There is no right or wrong way to scrap a car as long as you stay in legal boundaries. The information I gave you as the others is from personal experience and we try to help everyone and when needed we ask for help ourselves. There's more id like to say but at this point I'm not wanting a vacation

    Reason I asked for the help was being unsure of what I thought about in my head... I had a rough idea of what I was going to expect from scrapping it but had no real experience at all in doing the actual task. I learn a lot from reading and trying to understand from others is the best way for me to look at things... and now being very thankful to everyone on this forum.... what I thought was correct... if i can sell the car for $750 and run, it is the best situation verses scrapping it out.

    The only thing that I felt confident about price wise is getting a bit more for the tires than what you were saying that you got (knowing that I will be setting on them for a while, also)

    I'm just trying to figure out a bit from others to make informed decisions on best for my situation to make the most $$$ on the car. I believe that the only real thing that I've contradicted on was the price on the tires, the rest is **much** valuable information that I thank y'all for

    The reason I asked about the CATS on other cars is so that I could get a rough estimate on what they are worth.... then (now that I have a rough idea on overall scrapping of the car) I can factor that in and know when it's better to CL a car (doing nothing on it) verses scrapping it

    I wilo say this good score. First ask yourself how quick do you want to recap your money. Here goes if you part out you should clear 500 to 700. If the battery is good you can sell for 25 to 30 but the need to bring you the old battery. Next it should have 4 cats @ around 100 for all. Tranny 200 with core. Rad heater core 25. Wires 20. You sell the interior stuff on ebay. Light switches, ac controlls, window switches, taillights etc. 200 to 300. Once stripped take the rest to yard about 200. Good luck
