It's not a must, it's just that I used to do this many years ago and had a rollback and life was easy. But I don't want to spend the money / pay the insurance for a rollback. So I was thinking that a tilt bed would be similar. My main concern is cars with no wheels.

    Thanks for the input.

Don't go in debt for starters, if you already have a truck or even an SUV you can use just a 16footer and a come along and get most of the cars you will be picking up, slower sure but it will let you know if you even want in this business, after a few you will make enough money for better equipment. Go with the trailer regardless of your skill, once you figure it out you can line up with anything and get to places a tow truck won't get to. Both our 3/4tons are diesel better mileage and power, but if you go gas you can use the g as out of the cars you haul, depends mainly on your preference. Loading and hauling is very important in scrapping cars, but so is buying, breakdown, and finding other outlets for your material, lots more but it's all here an plenty of opinions and there's something to be learned from everyone
you got a picture of that truck? that would be awesome dovetail!?

    truck or trailer

i was watching gears on speed yesterday and they had a trailer on there telling you what you could do with a winch and how to keep your battery charged up to winch the vehicles on to the trailer.they had a solar powered charger mounted on top of the tool box that keeps the battery charged up to full charge to run the winch.i just thought i would pass that tip alo.g to you guys.

These are used a lot up here to haul new camper trailers, pull one up on the deck and pull one behind.

That's a very good question, well actually I've only had the trailer for about two months. I had an 18 foot full deck trailer but I sold it because I got laid off from my job then I bought this one because I had originally planned on starting a car hauling business but my job called me back so now I just use it to haul Junk cars. It works pretty good but I will admit that the 18 foot trailer was a lot better as far as picking up junk cars and no I don't get enough Business to justify the 40 foot trailer Especially since now I work six days per week At my job driving for the post office. I really don't have the time to do it like I used to and I always make sure all the cars have the tires on them before I pick them up.

I thought those were called dovetails? Never heard of beaver tail. Least not when talking about trucks or trailers Must be a regional thing.

Our trailer is similar to this one. Cost $4,000 new. 18 foot deck. 14,000 lbs. In your search for a trailer I would suggest finding one with attached ramps, versus the slide in ramps. They are heavy as hell and at the end of the day it's just a lot easier to flip up the ramp, lock it in and go. Should the ramps ever need removed, (and we have a few times), a pin is removed, then the bar that the ramps ride on slides out. Another thing I like about it is I can slide the ramps close together to run 4 wheelers up.

Was picking up 2 step vans at the time. One ran, other didn't. Didn't have a winch, so I put 3 chains together, positioned dead van at trailer ramps, then used other step van parallel to trailer to pull dead van onto trailer. Hope that makes sense. I suck at explanations sometimes.
2500 or 3500?.. whats a truck like that worth?..what year is that one?... what a older dually worth? i think iv made up my mind.

    Truck is an 08 F350 4X4 with the V10
Since the truck is my office, It has heated leather seats

Also has the BOSS V plow for winter money
I consider snow to be a Ca$H crop

I use a short 2 car trailer that lifts the first one, slight beaver tail on the back
Ramps slide into the back of the trailer just under where they hook onto the trailer >> Easy out of the way storage
Ramp ridge goes all the way across the back of the trailer so I can adjust the width of the ramps as needed
    2 winches incase 1 breaks
3 hand winches (marked with red arrows) with 4" straps along the side so if getting a car I know I am going to scrap, I just toss the straps over the top
Lots of D rings >> You never know what you will be getting
Also holes in the deck for hooks

Plow lights as back up lights >> Low beam
Switch to turn on high beams as work lights when needed

This is true in alot of states, here in ny any pickup over 5990lbs has to be registered as commercial..or you can be like me and transfer your plates and rock passenger plates on your dually

to answer the OP, it all depends on what you are doing. I use a rollback at work for hauling scrap and cars and it is much easier but if you dont scrap enough to warrant a rollback a truck and flatbed trailer will do just fine

Florida is like 5000 lbs. I just got a 1 ton dually and the only difference I saw was that they charged me more and you renew Dec 31 instead of your birthday. You also had to choose a max weight including passengers. The min was 5999, but that would be pretty much the truck and driver with one passenger. I choose 7999. I would have to look and check what all I was charged, but I think in the end my yearly reg cost will be like $175.

    equipment trailer
tandem axle equipment trailer. tag along. 10-12,000 gvw. made by superduty. completely new brakes[ shoes, actuators, plates , springs etc] solid deck. fenders done a couple years ago.

This looks nice, it has a 16'x82" deck. 8 lug wheels, 6000lb axles. (Tires/wheel could match my truck, good just in case for spare situations)

Think its worth the price anyone?
