Scrapping computer monitors-Illegal?

Is scrapping computer monitors illegal, and if they are why?

Not in my state, but you have to properly dispose of the glass. you can't just throw it away.

What about the hiss it makes when you brake the yoke off? What is that hiss?

If its a bonded yoke you will have to brake the yoke off. And a tip on getting the copper seperated. I just put my anvil into a storage tote. Grab my 3lb sledge and pile of yokes then start poundin away. The tote will catch most of the junk and your left with a nice pretty pile of copper.

I scrap tvs and computer monitors all this time. I work with someone who legally takes the old glass tubes. If you have ever searced YOUTUBE, look for MIKETHESCRAPPER. He resides in New Jersey. He wraps the yoke in a towel and smashes the yoke and removes the copper. Good idea! He is very knowledgeable! Scrapnscrap.

why do you need to smash the yokes? I've found them to be fine just the way they are. Maybe a bit of hot glue on em, i just break the bigger pieces of that off, and toss it in the bucket

You should just snap the little glass pigtail thats inside the ring of the small pins on the rear of the screen, where the plug is.
That lets the air in & from then onwards the screen won't explode when it gets broken by accident.

I just grab the plug & board stuck on the the rear of the screen & twist it sideways like I am undoing it. I looking elsewhere & with my eyes closed at the time.
I hear it snap & the air woosh in & then I'm safe to remove the yoke & degausser & the rest of the copper & ali heatsinks.

Boy, when they explode, they really explode, I can see the shockwave fly off it at the time. 6 Foot radius of broken glass shards 1 - 3inches long.

Knock on wood - I haven't had one break on me yet. Nor do I ever intend to.

No need to brake the tube like Jbravo said take off the clamps and twist the yoke off never had one that wouldn't come right off. No need to vent the tube it is a vacuum, it won't explode. I think this was discused in another thread. PS the clamps are SS and some of the screws are SS also, check with magnet.
