    Un-boxing a 1993 Zenith Sentry 2 TV in cabinet

This my first CRT scrap.. I'm going to do a few more tonight. I got a few old circuit boards, some wires, some little metal pieces yanked off the main board, and a yoke with copper wire on it. I pulled off two large capacitors before I started, just to be safe. Not Pictured: Two small speakers in the cabinet. I had my little shop-vac handy, lots of cobwebs inside the cabinet. I accidentally let the vacuum out of the tube (This thing is heavy) but didn't bust any glass. I usually wouldn't have bothered with it, but my neighbor had put it on the curb in front of my apartment. I screwed the back on and i'ts ready to be dropped off for free disposal at the county's hazardous materials landfill.

If you are having trouble getting the reddish rubbery sealant off the CRT TV tube Copper coils.

Put it in the freezer for a couple of days and then take it out and while holding the coil in mid air with some pliers, bash the frozen rubbery stuff with a hammer and it will shatter into lots of tiny chunks. Almost leaving the Copper coil 100% clean.

Wear safety glasses and earmuffs (because you cannot close your ears) and do this in a easyly cleaned area, like a garage or such.

It does take 2 days, it can happen with one day, but its never as good as two days in the freezer.

Ugh, the county's website says that they accept CRTs for free. So I gathered some and scrapped them. But now I'm ready to take them in..I called them...and the automated message says it costs 35 cents a pound to take in TVs. And Best Buy won't take console TVs!

I changed my mind. Both of the ones I did today had bonded yokes, and one was super dusty inside.

Are you also pulling the degaussing wire, the tinned copper wire in the corners of the tube (with the springs attached), and the hose clamps around the neck of the tube?? (some are SS, others SS with a steel screw).

    It all adds up.

whenever I get really dusty stuff I give it a good blast with a leafblower. just another great tip I learned here
I'm sure it looks odd with pc's and tv's opened up in a couple lines across the yard but after seeing the huge clouds of dust, I wouldn't work on them without doing it anymore.
When the dump started charging for tv's, so did I. They charge $.18/lb I charge $.20/lb and I still get quite a few as lifting them is "work"

I recon that dust is dangerous.
With computers I spray the inside down with a bottle of kitchen cleaner thats had water (50%) and a few drops of detergent and a splash of denatured alcohol in it.
I spray it so everything wet and leave it for a bit. Then I rinse the gunk off after I have removed the parts. It actually balls and falls off, it leaves the boards clean as new.

I have inhaled small bits of this loose dust and I KNOW where its stuck into my lungs, I can feel it.
Since this dust is years of recycled and filtered germs and cigarette smoke condensed into a fine powder. It cannot be good for you.

But a spray with the spray and the problems gone, cleaner boards and safer for everyone.
I dunk the power supplys in a bucket of warmish water with the same kitchen cleaner and stuff in it before I open them.

You're going to open a tv one day and it's going to have something more than dust inside.

Someone near me set a TV out at the curb (knowing full well there is no one to pick it up here) about 6 months ago. At first it was like a tease for me (I don't do CRT's) every time I drove past it. Now it is more than half covered in weeds and vines and there is no way you would get me near it. This is Florida... no telling what will jump out at you. In fact, try and grab it and something may well pull back trying to keep it...

I left the yokes (I've done 6 CRTs so far) in the freezer for a week (forgot about them!) and I put them in a cloth bag, put a wooden board on top, and ran it over with my car. It just cracked the yokes (and the board), so I brought the bag inside and beat it with a small hammer. That worked well, though the de-gaussing cable gave more copper weight compared to the time spent. Pulled the flybacks, small transformers, and heatsinks off all my low-grade circuit boards and put them in their own bins. I unspooled several of the small transformers, but eventually realized that it wasnt worth the time. It's good to know how to do it though. Took the scrapped TVs to Best Buy 1 or 2 at a time, and left the Zenith console out on the curb. I think apartment maintenance took it, I had told them about it. Out of 6 TVs, 2 had bonded yokes, didnt pull those off, 2 had aluminum DG cables, and 2 had aluminum yokes. I didnt track which ones correlated with which. All said and done, I came out with 2.2 lbs of clean #2 copper wire from low grade items, which equals about $5, and some heat sinks. But at least I know how to do it now. I'm going to concentrate on computers and stuff, and if I get low grade boards I will sell them by the pound.

My yard had no problems taking the flyback transformers for the longest time but now that things are tight, they refuse to buy them or the fans from computers.

Since I live in the projects, most of the stuff on my curb has that stuff in it.. I'm used to it, just a quick run of the shop vac. The dust is worse though, especially since I had an allergy test last week and found I'm very allergic to dust and mold.

you can get shred for them can't you?
they both got downgraded here, now classified as computer scrap at $.05/lb last time I was there.. a little better than shred at least.
